Let’s Weekend!
November 8 to 11, 2024
Jazz at Lincoln Center: Frederick P. Rose Hall, Broadway at 60th Street
On Friday night, jazz legend Bill Charlap begins a 3-night stand at Dizzy’s Club, which is part of Jazz at Lincoln Center, with shows at 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. (Sunday shows are at 5:00 and 7:30 p.m.) Charlap has been playing piano professionally since he was a student at the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan, and he’s led one of the top trios in jazz for more than 20 years. He’s collaborated with the likes of Diana Krall and Tony Bennett, though it’ll just be him this weekend, on solo piano. Tickets start at $25. There’s also “Bebop Revolution: The JLCO with Wynton Marsalis” on Friday and Saturday nights at the larger Rose Theater at 7:30. Tickets start at $42.
UWS Greenmarkets: Various locations on the UWS; check here for location, hours and vendors
It’s peak season for fall produce and I’m starting to think about Thanksgiving recipes. At the UWS’s many greenmarkets, you can find late-harvest fruits like apples and pears, along with vegetables like squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, and kale. I’ve even found Thanksgiving recipes at my local market, which is at Columbia University along Broadway from 114th Street to 116th Street on Sundays starting at 8 a.m. It’s not just vegetables. They have fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, other drinks, baked goods, donuts, flowers, and more. My kids used to love the duck from Hudson Valley Duck Farm! The UWS has lots of greenmarkets to choose from, including one on West 97th Street that’s open on Fridays, a 79th Street Greenmarket that’s open Sundays, and one at Tucker Square on West 66th Street that’s open on Saturdays. Add your favorite local greenmarket in the comments!
Fall Leaf Peeping: Central Park, Riverside Park, and other local parks
In the fall, many of Central Park’s roughly 18,000 trees transform into golden shades of yellow, orange, red, and more. Central Park Conservancy has produced this handy map that’ll help peepers find the most colorful foliage in Central Park. There’s also a fall foliage tracker, that’ll tell you when your favorite trees are showing off their color. If you’d like to help rake leaves in Riverside Park, mark your calendar for November 16th and check Riverside Park Conservancy’s website for locations and details for this volunteer event, including what to wear, what to bring, and what will be provided.

Also farmer’s market on Saturdays on south end of Morningside Park (110 St.). They have some unique stands. Note the Columbia market also open on Thursdays. I love knowing I cannshop four out if seven days at these markets!
Let’s not forget the West Side’s own New Plaza Cinema.
