The NYPD released the citywide crime statistics for the nine months ending September 30, 2024. The report shows a decrease in 4 of the 7 major crime categories, compared to the same period in 2023. Murder incidents declined by 11.2%, with burglary, grand larceny, and grand larceny auto also showing declines. According to the data released, rape, robbery incidents, and felony assaults increased by 14.4%, 1.4%, and 5.6% respectively.
The charts below also show the nine-month results for hate and transit crimes, in addition to the seven major crime categories. The report noted that there were over 4,100 marches, protests, and demonstrations citywide since the October 7th attack by Hamas and Israel’s response. There was a 30% increase in bias incidents citywide, according to the report, fueled by a 74% increase in anti-Jewish incidents and a 338% increase in anti-Muslim incidents. The Upper West Side precincts reported a 25% increase in hate crimes, but did not provide a breakdown of the motivation for the crime.
According to the report, the decrease in transit incidents citywide resulted from the NYPD’s “ongoing strategy to prevent [transit] crime and provide reassurance to passengers.”

Lies, damn lies, statistics.
People are on edge. Police just aren’t bothering to deal with anything. I saw a few people jumping turnstiles the other day. I saw police nearby and mentioned it. They shrugged their shoulders. I was going to take their badge numbers but didn’t. I have tremendous respect for them and understand that they don’t want to deal with a confrontation when nothing will be done.
And it will only get worse if Trump wins.
Look, I hate Trump. I’m voting for Harris. But the idea that the President will have an effect on turnstile jumping/sucker punching/moped-on-the-sidewalk riding, etc. is ludicrous. These are local issues that are dealt with by local politicians.
And if Harris wins????
Peace & Prosperity
And socialism. And higher taxes. And military weakness. Etc,etc.
When Donald won in 2016, all kinds of hate and violence were made acceptable under his leadership. Families, marriages, friendships were/are being torn apart because of his divisiveness. My own may become one of them. His cronies will absolutely make it less safe for all of us., as his factual track record demonstrated. As for socialism, can you define that, please? Military weakness, how? Donald likes to cozy up to dictators who have openly stated their intentions to harm our country, and destabilized our relationships with long term allies, and loves to defund government organizations . How are we going to be safe with those policies? How are we going to fight cyber crime if he’s tearing down government agencies that don’t have enough funding as it is? He made us a laughing stock internationally. And he has no idea how tariffs work and how if you think consumer prices are bad now, wait until Donald starts “taxing” companies to bring you goods, you clearly don’t understand that those costs will be passed on to consumers. The U.S’s leadership on climate? One of the first things he did is trash our global commitments to reduce GHG emissions and put a climate denier as head of the EPA. The ACA? Also tried to trash it. I depend on that, why are you so keen to trash my health insurance? And let’s talk about election denial, shall we? Jan 6, 2020 was an insurrectionist, violent riot stoked by Donald while his advisers were telling him he had lost the election. Both he and his very troubled running mate have gone on record multiple times recently avowing to not recognize the upcoming election results if they don’t win. That’s why JD Vance got his job – he promised he would do what Mike Pence would not. And how do you explain all the Republicans coming over to stand with the Democrats and not vote for Donald? Major party figures, former staff and administrators, rank and file republicans, many formerly voted for him and after Jan 6 said no more, or how he disparages veterans, or many crimes–the list of offenses is long–say “no more” to a second term. Your words are instantly recognizable as a script of half truths, misdirections, and misinformation you have read on social media. Can you not do better?
Did we have “socialism” under Biden? Obama? Clinton? No, no, and no. Harris will not bring about the socialist bogeyman either. Good grief.
It appears from the 20th Precinct website that the seven major crimes were up 25% year-to-date compared with 2010. I don’t think that Upper West Siders should tolerate this.
In the past month, two little old ladies were randomly punched in the face by strangers, and a man was robbed in broad daylight… in Lincoln Square. This is just absurd. So while it’s nice that statistics say one thing, perception of public safety is a very different thing.
What happened to Gristedes on 84th/Colombus? All the glass was shattered out Friday morning
No Ben and Jerry’s?
Please define GLA. Something other than grand larceny?
Grand Larceny Auto
The NYPD chief of police was forced to resign after he was placed under investigation, and less than a month later the interim NYPD chief was forced to resign for being under investigation as well.
No one is getting arrested or charged. That is why crime is “down.”
My Duane reade on 79/ Amsterdam is robbed multiple times per day. I witness this. No one calls the police bc they will not arrest them, nor will the DA or gale do anything. Citibank in 72nd Street was vandalized on 10/7 with hail to the martyrs, as were hostage posters on 96th with dog feces. I personally was verbally assaulted by 4 individuals on my corner who were ripping down posters calling me and my children settlers and colonizers. This was reported to our CM- absolute radio silence. I went into subway on 79th – man smoking crack at 12 pm. Absolutely no police presence.
These statistics are gaslighting. Let’s see some raw numbers of antisemitic hate crimes. We all know see what is happening.
Uws mother, What you witnessed is a petit larceny, not a robbery. At Duane Reade shoplifting is non stop, the reality in NYC is nobody cares. This is your New Normal.
And when the perp is carrying a gun? Still petit larceny? I’ve seen this happen at 3 different DR locations (2 of them are now closed). The manager of at 72nd and B’way has risked his life more than once. The police are parked right across the street and still nothing is done. What does it take?
When you’ve got a Mayor /former ex-policeman in charge of Noo-Yawk ..?! What do you expect!?? Sounds pretty obvious to me! He ain’t going after his buddies!
Vote for better candidates.
Hate crimes seem to be something more in the accusation than the act.
You guys voted for a cop for mayor, we tried the conservative route and we see how that worked out.
I for one didn’t vote for Adams; Scott Stringer was my top pick, but alas, alas.
Things were worse 50 years ago.
Do these stats include the multiple crimes committed daily in City Hall?
Weird how putting a corrupt cop in office didn’t solve our problems…
@Peace
You can’t be serious. Peace and prosperity? What exactly did she do to achieve that in 4 years and what is her current plan? She doesn’t have one.
I would suggest you attend the monthly meeting with the 24-precinct command.
You will get a lot of information about what is going on in your neighborhood, not only on this issue
There is a Q&A portion where you can ask questions about an issues you want more information and/or clarification.
It is the third Wednesday of every month at the Bloomingdale Library on 100th street between Col and Amsterdam, at 7PM.
The next meetings are October 16th, November 20th, and December 18th
Oh wow, felony assault only went up another 5% on already crazily high number. Amazing.
