Seafood lovers rejoice!

For the first time last week, signage for The Mermaid Inn appeared on the awning of the popular restaurant’s new Upper West Side location.

The seafood eatery served customers for 15 years on Amsterdam Avenue between West 87th and 88th streets, before it shuttered in the fall of 2022. A little more than a year after the closure, owner Daniel Abrams announced that they would be reopening in the neighborhood at 335 Columbus Avenue, at the corner of West 76th Street.

Initially, the new outpost was expected to open in 2023, but the site remained boarded up. This June, Abrams told West Side Rag that he planned to open in the middle to end of August.

While that timeline did not come to fruition, the appearance of the awning signage last week is a positive indicator for those hoping for an opening in the immediate future.

Abrams did not respond to the Rag’s request for an update on where things stand.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Those mini cut out window peep holes let you view the inside “progress” – I think the Coney Island Mermaid paraded will come along faster than this restaurant opening.

So much bitterness in the WSR comments. Why not be happy a restaurant many love will be back?

Right? And incorrect info. If @Mermaid Fan really looked in the “peep holes”, they’d see the construction is coming along very nicely. Should be fun once it opens – cannot even recognize that it was a Chase bank!

Yeah, what I was able to see of the inside was far from encouraging.

I love Gus’ photo of an iconic UWS building: warm-colored brick, sturdy proportions, palazzo-inspired window details, the potential for lively street-level retail. It puts the new breed of dull glass boxes to shame.

Can’t wait until they close Amsterdam location and give the sidewalks back to the people! Bad neighbors they were.

What ever happened to the Mexican restaurant that was to open in the Olcott where the old Dallas BBQ was? That doesn’t look to be happening?

In the spirit of “whatever happened to,” whatever happened to the Chinese restaurant that was supposed to open in the former space of the late lamented Mirabelle on West 86th St? Haven’t seen visible activity in many months.

Oh dear! Not another restaurant in the Olcott! The amount of garbage dumped daily on West 73 their rear entrance is horrible
    for us who live here.
    Please no restaurant in Olcott!
Not unless they put their garbage in front
of their restaurant on West 72

Maybe if they didn’t have such a high turn over with management, they’ve been though 5 director of operations in three years

Any word on the Jacob’s Pickles move? Construction seems to have stalled. They were originally scheduled to open this month.

Does anyone have an update on what was supposed to be a gastropub on 72nd and Amsterdam? It looks like something is finally happening at the site.
