The construction process officially began Monday morning for an elevator at the West 81st Street-Museum of Natural History subway station at the southwest corner of Central Park West.
Workers propped up multiple levels of fencing and stationed heavy machinery in the area on Monday.

The major development comes a few days after West Side Rag spotted a construction worker surveying the street corner in preparation for start of work.
An MTA spokesperson confirmed to the Rag that the station entrance will remain open during the first phase of construction and that the developments on Monday were “early stage work” for the project.
However, the southwest station entrance is expected to close at the beginning of the second phase of work, which an MTA spokesperson said would begin in roughly three weeks.

Work has also begun at the B and C train station entrance at the southwest corner of West 97th Street and Central Park West, which will also be getting a new elevator. If any readers have photos of the work going on at that station, please send them to info@westsiderag.com.
