The Cathedral of St. John the Divine invites you to the last choral concert in our Great Music in a Great Space series on Saturday, April 20 at 7pm. Explore Haydn’s Mass for Troubled Times (Missa in Angustiis) with its stark and powerful opening that gives way to the light and joy we all seek. Also known as the Lord Nelson Mass, this is a work that is just as relevant today as when Haydn wrote it. Featuring Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass Soloists, chorus, organ, and orchestra under the direction of Director of Cathedral Music Kent Tritle. Be enraptured as the music moves from stark and powerful to light and joy.
Also on the program are two wonderful works not to be missed! Revel in the beautifully rhythmic writing for strings in Vivaldi’s Beatus Vir (Blessed is the Man) combined with ethereal vocal lines. And be captivated by Monteverdi’s raucous Laetatus sum (I am glad) with a recurrent bass that drives the momentum forward until a stunning ending.
Come to the Cathedral (Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street) for an evening of sacred choral treasures of peace, hope, and praise.
Tickets available for $35 and $65 at stjohndivine.org. (Day-of Student Rush Tickets will be available at the door, 1 per student, with valid ID.)
About the Cathedral of St. John the Divine
Over one hundred years ago, the trustees of the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine conceived its mission to be a house of prayer for all people, an instrument of church unity, and a center of intellectual light and leading in the spirit of Jesus Christ.
Today, as the mother church of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and the seat of its bishop, the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine serves the many diverse people of our diocese, city, nation and world through the worship of God; pastoral, educational and community outreach activities; cultural and civic events; international ecumenical initiatives; and the preservation of the great architectural and historic site that is its legacy.

Please seek donations to finish this cathedral.
Perhaps more important is to seek donations to feed the enormous amount of children that go to bed hungry every night in NYC. This building has stood not finished for decades so it can stand for decades the same way.
Sorry, don’t compare that to kids going hungry to bed every night. Children have parents, schools and organizations that can feed them or care for them. The church has only us and donations.
If the original vision of the structure were to be realized it would include a colossal 1.3 million pound tower on a site whose subterranean levels and strata are known to have water running through them.
Even if a donor came along and offered to make such a sizable donation I would hope that the cathedral would instead, as they have been, use the money on good works and to serve its pastoral mission rather than build up an already impressive edifice. As the building stands now, it is a fine symbol of where such money is more appropriately spent.
Sounds like the ideal 4/20 event. I’ll take an edible and roll on over.
This performance is an opportunity to see uniquely talented musicians perform in one of the most beautiful structures on earth. Kent Tritle puts his heart and soul into everything he does. And he brings out the best in the brilliant artists he works with. Highly recommend!
