Good update. But these stats only reflect crimes actually reported to NYPD by victims. Shoplifting and other incidents may not be getting written up. It’s really hard to know the full picture.

Adams for Mayor!

Oh wait, we can’t ascribe any new developments to specific politicians.

How can rape have gone both up and down? “Murder incidents declined by 17.2%, with rape . . . also showing declines. According to the data released, rape and robbery incidents in the city increased by 4.8% and 4.3%, respectively.”

It is for certain that many crimes of any sort ate not reported for whatever reason, and I know that some are simply blown off by the police. Whatever numbers may be
touted by the city must be taken with the proverbial grain of salt.

What you say is not new. It has always been the case. There’s no question, however, that murders get reported and that number is down. And because of insurance, car theft is always reported and that’s down too.

Whoever is in charge of auto theft at the precinct should get a promotion.

Thank you for consistently covering this news! Could you please publish comparable statistics for 2019 (before many of the changes in the criminal justice system and pre-pandemic)?

yeah, those pesky robbery, misdemeanor assault, hate and transit crime statistics…
statistically speaking and considering confidence intervals, there are only 3 categories where there is some improvement. would also be nice to have a comparison to 2019.
not to mention all the crime that is not being reported.

Ray Kelly was a big advocate for juking the stats. That’s why the Bloomberg years had consistently “low” crime rates.

I suspect they have redefined crime.

Lots of crime post-Bragg has been downgraded. Look at his first day memo and read the journalists who have been closely covering these changes (you won’t find it covered by mass media (giving “manufactured consent” all new meaning.) Gaslighting for “justice.”

Looking at the CompStat report for the 20th Precinct, it appears that crime year-to-date in the seven leading categories was up almost 10% this year versus 2010. So the gains made after 2010 seem to have been lost.

Seems the best way to lower instances of crime would be to get the recidivists like this off the streets! https://nypost.com/2024/04/08/us-news/nyc-latin-kings-member-arrested-9-times-this-year-but-keeps-getting-cut-loose-due-to-bail-reform-sources/

Who would’ve thought! Maybe violent criminals should be in jail for a meaningful and proportionate period of time! I wish we weren’t living in the Twilight Zone!

I see shoplifting everytime I visit a supermarket. I see fare evasion whenever I take public transport. These numbers are minuscule, stuff is not getting reported.

People aren’t arrested or charged or held. Cops are afraid to talk to or arrest anyone. Of course, crime will go down if there are no arrests.
