Malin+Goetz, the luxury skin care and fragrance company, is closing their boutique at 455 Amsterdam (on the corner of 82nd Street) at the end of June. Staff members will be relocated to the shop at 100 West 72nd Street (at Columbus Avenue), which opened in January 2022. Malin+Goetz originally opened in Chelsea in 2004 and now has locations around the world. It is known for using natural ingredients in their skin care line.
Riverside Veterinary Care of Columbus has opened at 428 Columbus between 80th and 81st Streets. This animal hospital was previously located at 219 West 79th Street, operating under the name Riverside Veterinary Care South, and has all the same staff. It is no longer affiliated with Riverside Veterinary Care North further uptown on the UWS. The space used to be the children’s clothing store Polarn O. Pyret. (Thanks to Billy for the tip.)
ChaShaMa, the temporary art gallery at 697 Amsterdam Avenue (on the corner of 94th Street), has started its second exhibition, which will run through June 24th. The show, titled “Skin,” is a solo exhibition by the artist Xinyi Liu, who “creates works that metaphorically mimic the processes of treating wounds to heal.” The space is the result of a partnership with ChaShaMa, an arts access organization, and the West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing, with support from Council Member Gale Brewer. The temporary space — which used to be Upper 90, the soccer gear store – will house works by a rotation of artists for the next few months, with the option to be extended. Its hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 1pm to 6pm.
Bareburger, the burger chain at 2233 Broadway (between 79th and 80th Streets), is temporarily closed because of a gas leak. A spokesperson from ConEd told WSR that the gas service was shut down on May 11th due to the leak. “In most cases, a licensed plumber is brought in to make repairs, after which ConEd and the Department of Buildings return and inspect the work,” the spokesperson said. “If inspection is passed, the gas will be turned back on.” A representative from Bareburger told the Rag that they plan to reopen mid June. (Thanks to Joy and Ian for the tips.)
Shobha, a laser hair removal salon, has opened at 2148 Broadway, between 75th and 76th Streets. Its services include brow design, threading, sugar waxing, and microblading, among other cosmetic procedures. The team that previously worked at the Shobha location near Columbus Circle, which has closed, has moved to staff the UWS location. This storefront has been vacant for the last few years.
Eve’s Clothing and More, an online brand, has opened a pop-up store in Turnstyle, the underground shopping center at the Columbus Circle subway station. Owner Evelyn Sosa, who opened the store earlier this month, told West Side Rag that she sells shoes, swimwear, handbags, clothing, and accessories. The pop-up will be there at least through the end of the summer and Sosa hopes to make it permanent.
Mom’s Food Market is opening at the corner of 110th Street and Manhattan Avenue. It replaces a Starbucks. We’ll post an update when we have more information. (Thanks to Gary for the tip.)
How about bringing back Westside Market where Bed, Bath & Beyond’s Harmon used to be?
Two years of renovating that spot only for Harmon to close in less than two years, whereas Westside Market was at that spot for YEARS. What a waste!
Westside Market business has had a hard time the last few years & Even Costco food sales are way down this year so the timing is very bad to expand.
I work on the UES and try to stop at the Westside Market on Lexington a few times every week before I head home. It’s always busy. I really missed the store when they moved from Broadway & 77th. Very happy to see that they still have the same prepared foods and bakery items. : )
Since they closed the 77 Street store IIbeen going to their 110 Street & Broadway stores for the last few years but their prices have gone up too much & the long lines are gone & they are now sadly higher than their competition.
GREAT idea!
One can dream…..
Sherry Herring on 72nd closed this week, big loss imo.
A shame, but not surprising. Such nice staff, delicious food, but the prices were way too high for the portions given, which were very, very modest.
Agree. I really liked the staff and enjoyed a few sandwiches. But every time I paid for one of those sandwiches I couldn’t believe how expensive it was.
Does anyone know when, if ever, Kossar’s is opening? They are great! I go to their location on W. 30th Street sometimes, and would really love to have them a bit closer. I know there was a ConEd issue a while ago with the W. 72nd Street location.
Many years ago I went to Kossars on the LES to try their much heralded bialy. I was very disappointed. However there are two fantastic alternatives for a great bialy: 1) Bo’s Bagels in Harlem (chewy, crusty, overloaded with onions and spices) 2)Orwashers (pillowy soft, onions cooked so long they are sweet. Not always available, entirely sold out by 10am).
How about a West Side Market or Trader Joes at 86th and Broadway where Gap and Gristedes used to be.
Trader Joe’s has a locations 90th and Columbus, another at 72nd and Amsterdam. There is no need for another at 86th street.
TJ’s is very careful about citing locations for new stores.
There’s a Key food coming to 88 & Bway so that might be a disincentive for groceries two blocks down.
Pretty sure Bareburger won’t be open mid June. The bureaucracy of getting gas turned back on is mind boggling! Good luck with that.
Also, all the other retail there is closed – I thought that building is coming down so we can get another giant building and make Broadway even darker?
What’s going on in the enormous space at the NE corner of Bwy & 86? Looks like leasehold improvements are going in. Hopefully a tenant after close to 10 years?
It’s going to be a Starbucks
Is the plan for a Panera’s at the site of the old Victoria’s Secret on Broadway in the 80″s still on?
And Naya
I am so happy that Shobha moved into the neighborhood! I had been taking the train to their other locations for years because they are the only ones I trust.
