Though Mildred Alpern died in April at the age of 91, she left us poems and photographs to complete her Calendar Months Project, which has appeared on the first day of every month in 2023. As we reach the mid-year mark, here is Mildred’s offering.Â
“June”
By Mildred Alpern
June is sublime
Sweet summertime
Youngsters on scooters
Zoom all around
On the Civil War paved plaza ground
In this month at half year
Orange lilies appear
Like a loud trumpet blast
For a brass enthusiast
The longest day of the year
In our northern hemisphere
Is June‘s summer solstice
With its warm sunshine bliss
A time to sit out
Read a book, look about
At the cherry blossom blooms
In their ruffled pink costumes
Thanks, Mildred. See you in July!

I just love Mildreds poetry and accompanied pictures. She is a true “Artist”. I look forward to the 1st of every month when Mildreds observations appear and dance on the paper. A Visual feast.
“June, she’ll change her tune/In restless walks she’ll prowl the night …”
I look forward to Ms. Alpern’s poems as well. How wonderful that you keep her memory alive.
