Goddard Riverside’s Good Neighbor Awards are now accepting nominations through May 5. The awards celebrate people voluntarily helping build a better community in the Upper West Side, Harlem, East Harlem, or Yorkville. Submit an online nomination today—it’s quick and easy! The link is https://goddard.org/goodneighborawards/.

A committee of past winners and longtime volunteers will choose this year’s honorees, who will be recognized at a festive event in June.

Last year’s winners were:

  • Linda Carter Cooper, who has helped her Upper West Side Neighbors navigate housing and education issues for years while advocating for causes including affordable housing.

  • Mark Diller, a member of Community Board 7 who also been a PTA president, a School Leadership Team co-chair and an advocate for public schools.

  • LaDreamer Lark and her daughter Dreamer Daisy: This duo gave out care packages with hand sanitizer, re-usable face masks, toothpaste, toothbrush, lotion, and words of encouragement to get their fellow New Yorkers through the COVID pandemic.

  • One Block, founded by Ann Cutbill Lenane & Jake Russell, which has engaged community volunteers to pick up trash and keep the Upper West Side clean.

  • LeVera Sutton, a housing advocate who has organized with fellow tenants in her Harlem building and consistently engages people to learn about their rights as tenants.

  • Alan Winson has had an impact for many years through podcasts addressing social issues and activism—connecting the arts to the community, bringing issues to the forefront and bringing people together during the pandemic.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
