Stymied by a Starling
By Mildred Alpern
They line up on a border wall,
New Jersey in their view
Three leaders sit near leaves below
Planning what to do
Shall we rest awhile my feathered friends?
Or take off two by two?
Fly to outdoor balconies?
Peek in a window right through?
The leaders hop up to the wall
To let the others know
Then off the pigeon flock departs
To cling fast high and low
Alas, guess what! dominating space
Sits a starling chirping loud
Filling the air with sharps and flats
To an Upper West Side crowd
Two pigeons fly to a higher spot
And then look down below
To the starling with the glittering eye
Singing its Broadway show.
