Bondi Sushi Bar has opened at 2052 Broadway between 70th and 71st Streets. The menu has a special item to celebrate the opening – $5 lobster maki rolls – available only through this weekend. “The Upper West Side is such an underserved market when it comes to high quality, affordable sushi. After just two days, the consumer reception for our sushi bar, takeout and delivery is stronger than we could have imagined,” said co-founders David Hess and Aiden Carty. The space, which has a 12-seat sushi bar and a takeout/delivery area, is open from 11am to 10pm. Bondi opened its first restaurant in 2017 and now has several across the city, including on the Upper East Side, NoMad, Nolita, and Tribeca. The new UWS location replaces the soap shop Sabon.

NYC Barber Shop & Museum on Columbus Avenue between 73rd and 74th Streets – recognizable from the outside by its portraits of celebrities getting a trim – has closed and moved some of its antiques to the existing Reamir & Co. barber shop at 303 Columbus (74th-75th), which is under the same ownership. Arthur Rubinoff, a fourth generation barber, has been collecting barber memorabilia for over 25 years. He opened the Museum, a 501c3 nonprofit, in 2018 to honor this family tradition. 303 Columbus is smaller than the Museum space so it will only feature a portion of the collection, which has artifacts from the past century. Barbers were the original surgeons, Rubinoff told WSR, which is linked to the origins of red, white, and blue barber poles.

Medical Offices of Manhattan is now open at 112 West 72nd Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues. The practice offers primary care and many types of lab testing and is open on weekdays (8:00am to 6:00pm) and the first Saturday of each month. Appointments can be booked online on the website. The UWS location has two primary care physicians, a gastroenterologist, a nurse practitioner and a physician’s assistant. The Medical Offices of Manhattan has other locations at Columbus Circle, on the Upper East Side, and in Midtown East.

Soul Dental, a practice for cosmetic, family, and pediatric dentistry, is opening at 269 Amsterdam between 72nd and 73rd Street in the spring of 2023. Soul was founded by Drs. Yuliya Alterman and Alexandra Yungelson, who met on their first day of dental school at NYU College of Dentistry. They have two other offices in NYC. The new UWS location replaces Paper House, the stationery and party goods store that recently moved a block north.

Bond Vet, a primary and urgent care center for pets, is opening two new locations: 2875 Broadway at 112th Street and 2461 Broadway at 91st Street. Bond Vet’s existing office on the UWS, at 352 Amsterdam Avenue at 77th Street, opened in April 2020. At that time a representative told WSR they were lucky that construction was well underway before the pandemic began. Bond Vet originated in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, in 2019 and has grown quickly, adding many locations throughout Manhattan (Upper East Side, Hell’s Kitchen, Chelsea), as well as in Astoria, D.C., Boston, and Long Island. Bond Vet is a full-service veterinary clinic, offering routine care, emergency care, vaccines, spay/neuter, dental cleanings, and surgeries. Bond Vet also offers telehealth appointments. (Thanks to Sara for the tip.)

The Shell Seafood Bar and Kitchen has a sign in the window that it is “coming soon” to 635 Amsterdam Avenue at 91st Street, the former home of Blockheads. We’ll update with more information. (Thanks to Katie for the tip.)

Van Leeuwen The FAMOUS Ice Cream Co had to pay
$ 33,000 for breaking this law this October.

Cash has become an invitation for thieves so credit cards make sense in this day and age ! Cash should be an option , but I get it!

Very foolish for Bondi not to accept cash, it should be very easy for the city to fine them.

Yes, it is wrong. The City should be fining stores/shops/restaurants that only take cards or e-payments.

Sheesh, they’re right across the street from McDonalds and the weed shop. I have no idea what the law is but I wouldn’t want to have a pile of cash in my store at the end of the night. Why does it bother you so much?

Because not everyone has credit.

I understand where Bondi sushi is coming from with all the crime around us but it is illegal for a good reason.

The pizza place next to McDonald’s takes cash.

Also not taking cash discriminates.

So NYC law that a business must accept cash can be ignored because there is a weed shop and McDonald’s across the street? Sorry, life doesn’t work that way. The fact that this formerly beautiful neighborhood has those two establishments which makes this area even more of a slum should be your complaint.

I didn’t have a complaint, lol. I was responding to the original comment. I referenced McD’s and the weed shops specifically BECAUSE there is so much criminal activity there. Therefore, I completely understand why a business across the street from them would NOT want to have piles of cash on hand.

It’s still a beautiful neighborhood, and that McDonald’s has been there for years. And, issues on that block aren’t new, but if it it’s a slum to you, perhaps it’s time to move on.

Lauren,

Please don’t tell people to move if they see our neighborhood going down. I’m sick of reading how people should move if they see issues you don’t agree with.

That’s not what happened. I’m disheartened that someone would call one of the nicest neighborhoods in this city, and one that I have lived in for 36 years a slum. It is far from that and is beautiful as well. (I also think it is offensive because there a lot of people less privileged then us who can tell us what it’s truly like to live in a slum.) Of course, I agree that there’s increased crime and it’s getting scary every day. But that’s far from what she said.

Of note, in CardiZ’ response to my comment says she didn’t have a “complaint, lol,”” which is completely disingenuous, not all funny and completely revisionist; she was the one who called the neighborhood formerly beautiful and a slum, but I guess it was all a joke.

People have a right to express their opinion. You again are attacking the commentator by throwing around “disingenuous “, “revisionist” etc. and are still justifying telling others to move.

It is fine to be in disagreement, that’s what democracy is about, but personal insults and labels do not belong in a civilized conversation.

Here’s a thought. I don’t think calling the neighborhood a slum, when it clearly isn’t, civilized conversation. It’s an incendiary comment; and words have meaning. Had she just said there was an increase in crime and it is getting worse, she would be stating facts, which are quiet troubling, and I would have scrolled on. My suggesting about moving was directed to her, not to you or anyone else worrying about quality of life issues in our beautiful neighborhood.

WSR, are you going to keep publishing comments telling others to move? This has to stop.

As obnoxious as those comments are, I don’t think encouraging even more censorship in the comment section is really the path to take here.

Some people find it difficult to get banking services and credit cards. I admit those are not the people likely frequenting an expensive sushi place, but nonetheless, it is wrong to discriminate against them.

Paper House is *not* a stationAry store, as witnessed by the fact that — as you report — it moved a block north.

It is, however, a stationEry store since it sells paper goods.

I’m sad that the NYC Barber Shop Museum is closing. That’s the second unique business we’ve lost on that block in two months. At least the owner still has a place to show part of his collection. The story about it on his website is moving.

I find it surprising that Medical Offices Of Manhattan took the wheelchair ramp away before moving into that space…… What is that about??? I would think they would have more clients in wheelchairs than Rickey’s did……

Given the violent assaults on our Asian population, no cash seems a kind is self-defense.. perhaps a legal exemption makes sense?

The employees aren’t just Asian, and you’re advocating for 2 types of discrimination.

Furthermore, not just Asians have been assaulted in NYC.

Tried a few rolls at bondi after reading this. Perhaps “The Upper West Side is such an underserved market when it comes to high quality, affordable sushi” gave me false hope 😐 The sushi were neither high quality nor good value for money. Weren’t wrapped right. Unevenly seasoned or underseasoned. Not fresh. A dollar for avocado add on. Another and a half for spicy mayo. If I want better stuff, I’d rather pay a bit more for Blue Ribbon. For affordable sushi, Morton Williams at 60th and West End is more than sufficient.

I had exactly the same experience. I don’t want to discourage others but it is not for me. I want new businesses to succeed and hope maybe some people will like this type of sushi.

Sushi Yasaka is still the best in the area in my opinion.

There are 3 sushi restaurants on W. 72nd. Kumo Sushi between Columbus and Amsterdam, closer to Amsterdam. And Sushi Kaito and Sushi Yasaka, both between Amsterdam and Broadway. Just curious if you’ve tried any of them and what your opinion is. Thank you.

Kumo Sushi is not fancy – yet, is delicious. Definitely the best-valued sushi in the 72nd area. Been going there for years. Highly recommend.

Oops, I just realized that should have said, ‘both between Broadway and WEA.’ Not Amsterdam and Broadway. ; )

Really like Kaito omakase but not something I can afford every day!! Yasaka has fresh sashimi and I LOVE the agedashi tofu. Also priced right. Somehow Kumo’s menu didn’t look appealing so we’ve never tried.

TY so much for the feedback. I have a few friends coming over tomorrow and they’d like to go for sushi (within walking distance because of the marathon), and I wasn’t sure where to take them. I really appreciate it! : )
