On the way home from birding last night, we spotted Ellen Jovin, author and founder of The Grammar Table, just inside Central Park on West 72nd Street.
It turns out that she is a fellow birder and there is good news to share: Rebel with a Clause: Tales and Tips from a Roving Grammarian, her new (and surely amusing) book about all things grammatical, is being published by HarperCollins on July 19, 2022.
Longtime West Side Rag readers will remember meeting Ellen in a 2018 interview about why she lives on the Upper West Side. Stop by her Grammar Table and ask her your questions or just say hello. She has studied 25 languages, so don’t feel restricted to English.
But remember, she is a Roving Grammarian. Ellen and her Grammar Table are in the park sporadically when the weather is not too hot. She has also been spotted in Verdi Square.
Love this!
If you see Upper West Sider Ellen Jovin and her community grammar table, stop by and say “hi.” She’s brilliant, easygoing, open-minded, and always up for a linguistic challenge. With increased crime, inflation, and division everywhere and here, it’s refreshing and comforting to know we can all agree to disagree civilly on comma placement, colloquial speech, and gerund vs. present participle: Grammar Nazi is more an expression than a found fact, because Grammarians, in fact, are lovely people.
