Did you know that Oklahoma! was the debut musical for Rodgers and Hammerstein and opened in 1943 at the Majestic Theatre?

Did you know that the song “Surrey with a Fringe On Top” from Oklahoma! always made Oscar Hammerstein II cry?

Or what about this, did you know that Sondheim described “The Bench Scene” in and around the song “If I Loved You” from Carousel as “probably the single most important moment in the evolution of contemporary musicals”?

This and more theatre lore, and music! at Transport Group’s upcoming Rodgers & Hammerstein: A Broadway Celebration at The Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Hall on June 27th!

Performers include Mikaela Bennett (The Golden Apple), Sherry D. Bone (Ragtime), Donna Lynne Champlin (Sweeney Todd), Hannah Elless (Godspell), Danyel Fulton (Broadbend, Arkansas), Erika Henningsen (Mean Girls), Tony winner Rachel Bay Jones (Dear Evan Hansen), Danny Kornfeld (Harmony), Dorcas Leung (Hamilton), Sean MacLaughlin (Phantom of the Opera), Betsy Morgan (The King and I), Tally Sessions (Company), Alexandra Silber (Fiddler on the Roof), Jason Tam (Be More Chill), Jacob Keith Watson (Carousel), and Sally Wilfert (Assassins).

Baayork Lee, original Broadway cast member of A Chorus Line and The King and I, and Paolo Montalban, co-star of ABC’s film adaptation of Cinderella, seen on Broadway in The King and I, will co-host the evening.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
