IRO, a high-end clothing store on the corner of 71st Street and Columbus Avenue, was robbed of more than $8,500 worth of merchandise early Tuesday morning, police told WSR.
“At 3:52 a.m., an unknown perp entered the premises unlawfully by prying the front glass door with a hammer and pushing the glass in,” an NYPD spokesperson said. “They then removed multiple racks and displays, totaling more than $8,500.”
“They seemed to know the expensive stuff,” a manager told our reporter.
The incident is under investigation. No arrests have been made.
The store was burglarized, not robbed. It is a separate category from the crime of robbery.
Steve’s comment isn’t nitpicking; robbery means stealing by violence (or threat of violence), which is very different from stealing by prying open the door of an empty store.
Nitpicking
Thanks for clearing that up. I’ll sleep better.
I guess the owners don’t know anything about door/window gates! Making the place ideal for a breakin.
Oh, no, door/window gates would be ugly and we don’ want to spoil the look of the store, do we?
Does anyone shopping on Columbus actually buy this expensive and uninteresting clothing?
Most of the clothing for sale on Columbus are overpriced not to mention badly designed.
Does UWS crime only matter if it is a store that you frequent @m.pipik?
Yes, people do, but obviously not you. Why so judgemental? What would you rather have there? A Chicos? An old man suit store? A Walmart? Antique stores? Empty storefronts?
I don’t know why they got rid of the store gates at night, those are harder to break into.
