A “transformer fire” was responsible for an explosion heard in front of 150 Amsterdam Avenue at 67th Street on Wednesday around 2:30 p.m., an FDNY spokesperson told WSR.
“There was a very loud explosive noise,” reported tipster Jacqueline Stern.
Firefighters from Engine 40/Ladder 35, whose firehouse is diagonally across the avenue, responded quickly, contained the fire, and secured the scene. The FDNY confirmed there was “no extension to property” and no injuries.
Tipster Diane Chester told WSR that children from the Manhattan Star Academy on the second floor of the building were evacuated.
