A Ukrainian Flag Flies on West End Avenue

By Gretchen Berger

A lone Ukrainian flag waves proudly on West End Avenue between 76th and 77th Streets on Wednesday. Maybe we should all wave the Ukrainian flag.

Let’s remember who the bad people really are. People like Putin. Not parents worried about the verified risks of masking kids forever

Using an actual war to try to claim the moral high ground in an unrelated public health debate is shameful.

Keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out. My husband has relatives in Kiev and if Putin can’t be defeated I’m hoping they can escape to Israel.

To express solidarity with a victim of foreign aggression. Do you disagree? President Biden has been very clear that this is what is happening.

Why fly the flag? Because we should support a democracy that is being invaded by an autocracy. Who knows where this invasion by our enemy goes. After 9-11, the world supported New York. Or should they have asked why?

I’m all in for Ukraine .
I’m 100% against Putin/Russia.
But – Ukraine is hardly a democracy.
The present president shut down radio stations, a TV station and newspapers of a rival political party.
Still – I’m behind Ukraine and against Putin/Russia.

You do realize that the President of Ukraine, Zelensky, is Jewish, right??

Maybe not.

Also, you don’t seem that concerned about the extreme right wing HERE in the USA. I wonder why?

Bottom line. Whenever innocent civilians, including women are children, are being attacked and forced to flee their homes we should all care. Period.

A lot of people are unaware of it. Neither are they aware that current corrupt regime of the Ukraine is closely affiliated with neo-Nazis. They want to fly the flag of neo-Nazi regime.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azov_Battalion

I’m an not justifying the invasion before I get attacked by fellow neighbors. It shouldn’t have happened regardless. If, of course, WSR, publishes my comment as they lately heavily censor opinions that are not mainstream.

The article is in a very bad taste. The journalist is calling for an action which is not what journalists are supposed to do to start with, and is unaware of the situation.

As I said earlier, but WSR chose not to publish, flying an American flag became “offensive” lately. Apparently it is good to fly a Ukrainian one as the author suggests.

Not justifying the conflict, but please don’t call Ukraine a democracy. It is one corrupt regime attacking another corrupt regime.

Does anyone know a good optometrist??

My eyes are rolling so much I think I might need surgery to put them back in place and avoid permanent damage.

Seriously though, where are people getting their news from these days? I don’t know if it is disinformation or just lack of education about history but WOW!

Jen: THANK YOU for providing these links to explain how many Black’s in a “Red State” like Utah perceive some people flying the flag.
Sorry for making “assumptions” without having all the facts.
Guess I’ll go see if Trader Joe’s is selling “Humble Pie”!

For a long time, the Ukraine has been a virulent
anti-Semitic country. Just look at what has happened
to the Jews in the last 125 years.

Forget about the fact that Zelensky is half Jewish.
Look at the history of the country.

You know what else has been a “virulent anti-Semitic country” in the last 125 years??

Germany, France, Spain, Poland, Austria, and basically every country in Europe. Don’t forget the United States is on that list too!

And no, I won’t “forget the fact” that Zelensky is Jewish. In the 21st Century Ukrainians elected a President who is Jewish. Doesn’t sound like an anti-Semitic country to me. Not even the USA has done that yet.

Anyway, these are all pathetic attempts to justify acts of war against a sovereign nation by a literally psychotic dictator. Let me remind you that civilians are being killed. End of story. Sheesh!

@GGll
I deplore the loss of life that is now occurring in the
Ukraine. However, the virulent anti- Semitism in the Ukraine has been a fact for a very long time, and still exists.

One of my great-grandfathers and two of my maternal grandmother’s sisters were killed by Ukrainians in 1943,
simply because they were Jewish. They, along with hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian Jews, perished at the hands of the Germans as well as the Ukrainian people.

Ukraine had a vibrant Jewish population. Hundreds of synagogues. Look at it now.

My paternal grandfather was fortunate enough to leave the Ukraine in the late 1890s. Why did he leave? Pogroms. Not as extensive as in Czarist Russia, but extensive enough so that Jews could not be a vibrant part of society.

O.M.G.!!:
1.IF that is more than a rumor could you please provide details, like who said so and in what context; or
2.IF it is true then we are in truly bad shape, where “woke-ness” is more important than love-of-country

Seems like nobody here has lived through war happening on their own property.

Only one comment so far states it correctly- despite how amazing a government is-

“Bottom line. Whenever innocent civilians, including women are children, are being attacked and forced to flee their homes we should all care. Period.”

The aggressor is always at fault.

Do agree with everything your government does? Permanently fly your US flag? Does it accurately represent you ever? Cmon people democracy share your opinion not others.

Some serious authoritarian envy of some posters here or people that have never used their bunker and dry goods during a flood. Wow.

I think it is a brilliant idea to fly the Ukrainian flag! In fact, I shall try to find and buy one now! Those American politicians & TV Unreality stars supporting Russia & Putin in this act of aggression & madness must be put on notice that real patriots support struggling democracies like Ukraine; flag-waving might wake them up & get their attention. Thanks.

After reading all the comments above, AFTER I commented, I admit that I was too enthusiastic about a simple minded response to a very complicated subject: i.e. the corruption in Ukraine, the corruption in the USA, vis-a-vis Ukraine, and the over-the-top viciousness of Putin, who wants to recreate the good old days of the USSR & KGB. With Crimea & Ukraine, he’s making a good start on building the former bloc. When innocent people are killed & wounded in a war of invasion, supported by no one but Putin’s puppets, decent people want to do something, anything. And if that’s merely refraining from praising the aggressor or putting down the invaded, that’s better than nothing. Antisemitism has been alive & murderous in all European principalities for centuries. The USA’s shameful antisemitism may have been more low-key, but not by much. It’s a f-ed up phenomenon–like all tribes, there must be an Other to make a We. And it’s killing all of us.

You can’t be serious.

You said:”Antisemitism has been alive & murderous in all European principalities for centuries. The USA’s shameful antisemitism may have been more low-key, but not by much. ”

The American might have been more low-key, but not by much.”

Were 6 million Jews killed in America? Did America have the equivalent of Czarist progroms?

Were Jews killed in America? Yes? A lot? No.

How can you ever begin to compare anti-Semtism in this great country, with what has gone in Europe, Russia, the Ukriane, Moldova, Romania and other countries.

You got me there Old West Sider–poor choice of words, stupid perspective. There was genocide, slavery and a civil war on this country but no pogroms, Jewish ghettos and mass extinction. I stand corrected.

You realize during the Holodomor Stalin intentionally starved 4 million Ukrainians to death in part because of their Christianity and refusal to accept Soviet dogma.
