Rescuers prepare to transport the woman from 79th Street Boat Basin

By Joy Bergmann

Multiple FDNY and NYPD crews amassed along the Hudson River pathway at 72nd Street Sunday morning around 9:45 a.m. after a naked young woman jumped into the water, first responders told WSR at the scene.

The FDNY’s Marine One rescue boat team pulled the woman out and transported her to the 79th Street Boat Basin dock. The woman, who appeared to be in her late teens or early 20s, was then wrapped in a sheet and placed on a gurney. She appeared fully conscious; her eyes were open and she was sitting in an upright position. She said nothing as paramedics moved her into an ambulance.

I’m concerned for a friend’s daughter who is visiting the city but hasn’t been heard from in a day or so. Could anyone at this scene say if the rescued person had quite short hair? Or if it the hair seemed reddish? (I know hair is easily changed but short doesn’t usually get long quickly.) Was evaluation at Mt Sinai West? Hoping the best for everyone involved. Thanks first responders.

This young woman does not fit your description. I hope your friend locates her daughter soon.

I was there this am. Very scary stuff. One note, if there is ever an emergency down by the river cell phones 911 calls go to NJ which wastes precious time and is very confusing. There are call boxes in the park to call from that send you to nyc 911.

I think that’s the least of the girls problems.

With the Boat Basin being dismantled, are they leaving any facility for emergency workers to use for this sort of purpose? I have seen FD and PD pull up a number of times there, including at least once as a result of collecting a GWB jumper who was not as lucky as this girl.

I had the issue with a 911 cell call going to NJ several years ago. My friend had a bike accident in a stretch of the park that was far from a exit. There was no call box to be seen.

I guess the Park Department hasn’t fixed this issue yet. There must be some way to get cell towers on the Hudson Greenway

I do not think it was necessary to point out that she was naked. Clothed or naked, white black or orange, she needed rescuing.

You are wrong.
It makes sense to state exactly the event that took place.
