Monday Bulletin: Levain Freezes Over; 91st Street Plans Reveal Rooftop Pool; An ‘Edited’ Life

April 19, 2021 Weather: Sunny (though chance of rain later), with a high of 66 degrees.

Notices:
Our calendar has local and virtual events.

News:
Levain bakery, with locations on 74th and on Amsterdam Avenue between 76th and 77th, is an UWS legend, and now the cookies that locals have long known are to die for are available in a ready-to-bake version in the frozen food sections of Whole Foods stores nationwide, Forbes reported. “(Pam) Weekes and (Connie) McDonald started Levain in 1995 after they began baking huge cookies to sustain themselves during triathlon training. For years, they ran a small Upper West Side location as famous for its crowds as its cookies — and expect to sell 15 million cookies this year. But now an at-home version won’t be farther than your freezer.”

“New renderings have been released for Era, a 20-story residential building at 251 West 91st Street (on the corner of Broadway),” wrote YIMBY. “The aerial rendering depicts the top floors of Era and its highly anticipated rooftop swimming pool, the only one of its kind on the Upper West Side. The roof deck will also feature recreational and lounge areas alongside unobstructed 360-degree views of the surrounding neighborhood, the Hudson River, Central Park, and the Midtown skyline.”

Actor, writer, satirist, and instagram sensation “George Hahn, 50, lives with his two dogs, Smokey and Lenore, in a 360-square-foot converted hotel room on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. ‘It’s a very edited life,’” he told The New York Times, in an interview about how he spends his Sundays. And very familiar. “BRUNCH I like to go to the Viand or Tarallucci e Vino…STROLL I might go to the Strand, formerly Book Culture…I’ll also go to Zabar’s to pick up items like rugelach, bagels, their lifesaving cream cheese, French/Italian roast coffee and maybe one of their prepared foods for dinner…”

The weather is getting nice, and the vaccines are kicking in, so:

I'm out on the upper west side and let me tell ya the vaccinated older Jews are living their best life. They are giving elbow bumps, they are drinking coffee, they are putting their masks on to order a pound of Nova, they are enthusiastically saying hello, it's lit!

It’s about time this neighborhood got a rooftop pool with a view! This will absolutely be the finest community pool in the city, so for those who think developers care only about their clientele and not the well-being of the neighborhood, apology accepted. Wait hold on, residents only?

Can’t tell if you are serious or just trolling but I’ll play. If the building is not built with taxpayer money, why should the pool be open to the community? It could be, but the developer should not be subject to ridicule if they (a business, not a charity or NPO) decide that those who pay for the building (i.e. residents that pony up $1.5+mil) are the only ones that could use the facility.

The ERA looks gorgeous, good for them! I hope I can get a pool party invitation someday. 👍🏻

251 West 91St is on the corner of Broadway, not between West End and Riverside. Basic UWS street numbering – anything west of West End is #300 or higher.

Hopefully I get a free hour in the pool for correcting that?!?

So if we want to burn off a Levain cookie, we have to do a triathlon.

Please West Side Rag do not write any similar stories about the origin or caloric content of Milk Bar, Magnolia Bakery, Billy’s Bakery…. we on the UWS prefer to live in blissful ignorance! At least regarding baked goods.

As an “older Jew,” I take offense at Sarah Seltzers comment. Are the elder Christians lit? Are the young African Americans who are vaccinated going around giving fist bumps? Did she poll the crowd!!!

agree–what did “jews” have to do with this? ALL vaccinated people are finding more to do, including buying nova. Maybe she thinks only jews like nova? WRONG!! and news flash Sarah: babka, rugelach, challah etc are loved by all–not just Jews.
