PS 199 Playground Reopened, Then Partially Closed; Stop Work Order Remains in Effect

The playground at PS 199 on West 70th that was closed after debris fell from the adjacent construction site at 200 Amsterdam Avenue reopened this week, but the principal decided on Tuesday to close a portion again as a precautionary measure.

“Another team from the city’s Department of Buildings visited our school and recommended closing this back area of the playground,” she wrote in an email to parents. “Please note: no other incidents have occurred and this is purely precautionary.”

The stop work order that blocks construction on the rear of the building above the 40th floor remains in effect, according to the Department of Buildings website.

When complete, 200 Amsterdam will be the tallest building in the neighborhood.

Will this building actually be higher than the Rose building (above the firehouse on Amsterdam)?

How many times do things have to fall off of this eyesore before construction is stopped? What is the builder doing for the children to make up the loss of their playground? How much in fines is this reckless builder paying for his continuing threat to the neighborhood?
