Memorial Day weekend is coming up and there are some special events in the neighborhood that commemorate veterans who died in service to the country.

The Memorial Day ceremony at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at 89th Street and Riverside Drive starts at 10 a.m. on Monday and runs until noon. The U.S. Navy band will play from 10 to 10:30. “There will be speakers from the US Marines, Medal of Honor Museum, local politicians, and veterans and civilians from all walks of life. A US Navy Band will be in attendance,” according to the Riverside Park Conservancy. Learn more here.

The Central Park Conservancy is hosting a Memorial Walk Tour from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet at the Columbus Circle info kiosk area and walk through the park, learning about how generations have honored veterans. Learn more and register here.

The New York Philharmonic will play a free concert at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine at 114th and Amsterdam at 7 p.m. Seating is first-come first served, and they’ll start distributing tickets at 5. They’ll be playing Bruckner’s Eighth. “In this symphony beauty takes many forms: its gradual unfolding, burnished brass sonorities, soaring lyricism, and a triumphant ending. An inspiring, spiritual way to remember those who died while serving in America’s armed forces.” They’re also planning on broadcasting the music onto the adjacent pulpit green if the weather is nice. More here.

I attended the ceremony at the S & S Monument in 2013 or 2014. Washes away your cynicism about patriotism. I certainly felt enlarged by the immersion and the sanctification of our country’s military heroes, i.e., all of the service men and women. The more cynical you are about such things the larger the imperative to go, at least once. Don’t let the nay-sayers drag you down with them.
