Philip Roth, who died this week, lived on the Upper West Side towards the end of his life and mostly kept to himself, introducing himself to neighbors as “Phil.”
But he clearly enjoyed interacting with locals too, as evidenced by the interaction at the Patagonia store on Columbus between 81st and 82nd, described below by Laurie Cohen, who gave us permission to share.
Thanks to Margaret for alerting us to the story.
He got to kiss her – guess that was enough.
A lovely memory. A kind man, indeed.
Now there is a class act. Whataguy!
