Don’t make these common fitness mistakes:
Mistake 1. Signing up for classes with more than 10 people. Have you ever noticed that everyone is doing something different? Ever wonder if the class is right for you or if you’re doing the exercise with correct form? This can be an accident in the making! Classes of more than 10 people can’t offer the personalized attention that you deserve, making you more prone to injury. SOLUTION: Find a small group class with fewer than 10 people and make sure the class makes sense for your goals and fitness level.
Mistake 2. Skip the strength training. Strength training is even more important as you age. We start to lose muscle tissue in our thirties. Once you get to the fifth decade and beyond the rate of muscle loss accelerates. Strength training will help you with balance, mobility, will help prevent injuries, enhance bone density, improve posture, and of course, increase your overall functional capacity. SOLUTION: Participate in the strength training program twice a week. Make sure the program is appropriate for your goals, fitness level and orthopedic and metabolic concerns.
Mistake 3. Performing too much or not enough cardiovascular exercise. Most people over the age of 50 either do too much cardio or not enough. Studies suggest you should engage in 30 minutes of cardio three to five times a week of moderate intensity, or less if the intensity is more than moderate. Anything more than five days a week in frequency and more than 45 minutes in duration can cause burn-out, injury and even encourage the release a stress hormone called “cortisol”, which is released by the body when you are in a state of stress. This can happen from daily stress or exercise that is performed too much and at too high of an intensity. Although exercise in proper dosages can improve immune function, too much cardio or not enough can weaken the immune system making you more prone to getting sick. SOLUTION: Follow the above guidelines and always make sure you give your body a chance to recover. Recovery could be skipping a day or two of the gym and treating yourself to a massage or yoga class.
Mistake 4. Only uses the machines to build strength. Machine training is great for certain people for a certain amount of time. This means if you’re a beginner without guidance, or if you have a balance problem due to a neurological or orthopedic issue, then the machines could be a good way for you to build strength. But if you don’t fall in to this category, then you’re better off standing while exercising. We sit to much in general, so why would you go to the gym and sit even more? Sitting can cause muscles tightness and encourage muscle imbalances. SOLUTION: Try to perform exercises in the standing position. In life most of our activities are done from a standing position, which requires balance, core strength and coordination.
