A #WeStandUnited anti-Trump rally at Columbus Circle Thursday night stretched six blocks up Central Park West. Politicians and entertainers including Mayor de Blasio, Alec Baldwin, Cher, Mark Ruffalo, Rev. Al Sharpton, and Robert DeNiro rallied the crowd ahead of Friday’s inauguration.

Protestors said the pledge of allegiance and sang songs, including This Land is Your Land.

Right on! And we’ll keep it up and going strong. There has to be an end to this attempt that threatens all that’s good and right for the Country. It’s taken over 240 years of struggle to get here, and we cannot allow it to be destroyed in the next four years.

I don’t think “delusional” is the word you’re looking for.
People exercising their first amendment rights are not losers.
I recall attending rallies with my family in the 70’s at the UN protesting the “Zionism equals racism” resolution. Were we delusional? Or losers? Or fighting for what we believed in.

Honestly you make me a bit ill.

I find these protests and marches repellent. Their shrill rhetoric accusing their opponents of racism, sexism, homophobia, is part of what cost them the election. Making unjust accusations and insulting people is not a way to win support.

These young people should be focusing on improving their own lives and careers.

What is the meaning of the sign stating “Fight Trump Every Day”? Does that mean they are going to be complaining and whining about Trump every day at work, inflicting their political views on everyone else around them? I hope not, because I for one am sick of listening to it.

If they are so passionate about politics, why don’t they make a study of it and publish some articles advocating their viewpoint in a well thought out manner. Instead they engage in emotional outbursts and disruption.

“Fight Trump Every Day” is likely tied to the central theme of the protest, which is to encourage people to contact their Congress every day for the next 100 days to point out that they want health care for all, they want equal human rights for all, and generally push for the positions favored by the majority of the country, rather than the radical positions being proposed by the new administration.

Well, Julianne Moore turns 67 this year and I’m younger than she is so thank you, you’re very kind. Let me answer on behalf of the “young people” who’re out marching.

I’m from northern Virginia, grew up in the Reagan era. I remember marches and the AIDS quilt on the mall to get the Reagan and Bush administrations to wake up and quit ignoring people dying from AIDS. I wish that had happened soon enough to save lives of people like my uncle, who died of AIDS in 1991 at age 35. I remember marches on the mall to show the depth of popular will for women’s rights and to defend Roe v Wade. I remember marches on the mall to show popular concern to acknowledge and rely on science, pure and simple, to protect the then-at-risk ozone layer.

You could question the counter-hypothetical: would we have achieved progress on these issues without people turning out and showing up to put these issues front and center. It’s impossible to know.

I see so much at risk for the US under the Trump administration that I haven’t had to worry about, with a level of existential dread, for the past 8 years. Here are several quick examples: climate change, rising sea levels, women’s rights, healthcare, foreign interference in US elections and the treatment of middle class white collar professionals in Putin’s Russia, nuclear proliferation, national security, police brutality without consequences, and civil rights for minorities and the underprivileged. And those are just my known unknowns.

Those are the issues that bring me out to show up, be visible, and stand in engaged, vocal, visible support. Will it make a difference? Time will tell!

Wow….you sure haven’t been paying attention. Unjust accusations and insults are exactly what Trump did for his entire campaign. Lying, defaming, insulting and collusion …that’s how he won the electoral vote. Largely helped by Mr. Putin and his joy at having a “useful idiot” as President of the U.S. That is a direct quote and Putin is one very happy Russian now.

Curious. What part of “grab them by the pussy” would you consider an unjust accusation?

What part of “Mexicans are criminals and rapists” would you consider an unjust accusation?

Fight Trump every day means make sure this lunatic hears our voices for the next four years. What a shame that you’re already tired of hearing it. But get used to it, this is just the beginning.

What’s repellent is that a petulant narcissistic two year old, who is proud that he doesn’t read, who insulted a disabled reporter, mocked Senator McCain for being a POW, boasted about grabbing women’s genitalia, refers to Mexican immigrants as rapists, wants to ban all Muslims from entering the country, who insulted a Gold Star family, just to name a few, managed to hoodwink the American electorate into supporting him. He is the most unfit person to ever become the leader of the free world. The next four years will be unbearable under this loathsome creature. You know what I’m sick of? TRUMP- and his tweeting and his hostility and his disgusting unpresidential behavior. Fight him every day young people. I’ll be right out there with you as much as I can be!

YES! Well said. It was so inspiring to be at that rally last night with people who will not see their American values and way of life destroyed by a reign of billionaire oligarchs. Plans for gutting the National Endowment for the Arts and PBS. Plans to defund Planned Parenthood. Plans to deport millions of immigrants. Plans to cut access to affordable health care by repealing the ACA without a viable way to ever replace it. Plans to cut Medicare by 40%. Plans to cut Medicaid. And a plan to privatize social security. Plans to role back freedoms won for LGBT people. A degradation of women and their reproductive rights. What majority gave Trump and the Republicans the idea that the American people would let them destroy their precious way of life so their billionaire friends could have even more money and their right wing ideologues who exploit religion could repress others rights? None that I know of as Clinton won the popular vote by some 3 million? And as for the crowd last night, it was as mixed in age and diversity as any I’ve seen. It ended with the singing of This Land Is Your Land! As long as New York keeps standing strong it will be!

Any local demonstrations of support for our beloved, (very) soon-to-be-President DJT?

While I have been conflicted about Trump all along, he certainly has been making all (or at least most of) the right enemies. And the more they hate him, the more I like him.

Politicians and entertainers including Mayor DE Blasio, Alec Baldwin, Cher, Mark Ruffalo, Rev. Al Sharpton, and Robert DeNiro rallied the crowd ahead of Friday’s inauguration.

(Bold-text emphasis mine- Ind.)

Uh huh…

And note: The same people who demanded that Trump “denounce”, “repudiate” and “reject” various entities that he had nothing to do with simply because they had endorsed him but had made no such demands of Obama, whose candidacy for President had been endorsed by Louis Farrakhan, now brazenly align themselves with Sharpton. The hypocrisy has come full-circle.

Yes, Trump is an idiot, but why don’t all these cry babies wake up and realize that Hillary got billions from wall street for her campaign and that she is a bigger HAWK than Trump? She is also pretty corrupt at that. At least Trump is talking about making the inner cities better for blacks. Give the guy a chance and stop acting like its the end of the world. Count me in among those on the Upper West Side who voted for our new President, Donald J. Trump. (More than a mere Trump voter, I am proud to count myself among the “irredeemable” sub-set of the “basket of deplorables” half of Trump voters.)

I question whether this is the real “UWSHebrew”, though. This “UWSHebrew” talks about the total number of people on the Upper West Side who voted for Trump as being as little as six or seven. In contrast, the real UWSHebrew would surely have known that the actual number, while obviously a small minority relative to the total number of voters in these parts, had to have been at least in the hundreds.

Isn’t it about time those of us on the UWS who support our new President, Donald J. Trump, organize to demonstrate our support for him– or at least for the legitimacy of his Presidency? This should include individuals who did not vote for DTJ themselves but who nonetheless accept the legitimacy of the election results and wish to distinguish themselves from the “Not Our President” crowd that WSR has been amply and glowingly covering.

I wonder what WSR’s coverage of such a demonstration– one in support of our new President– would be like…

Elections have consequences, and at the end of the day, I won.

From the link you cited:

If there are other Republican groups celebrating the inauguration, let us know.

First to be clear: I did not mean to accuse you of deliberately not covering any local pro-Trump event. I take you at your word that you have not been aware of any (and, for all I know, there may very well not have been any, at least any that were public or widely known).

Please note, though, that “Republican groups celebrating the inauguration” is far more limited than the “demonstrations of support” (my exact wording) that I had inquired about and encouraged; neither those who voted for the President nor those who did not vote for him but nonetheless now support the legitimacy of his election and nascent Presidency, are limited-to Republicans. (Nor, for that matter, were those who voted for and supported Obama limited-to Democrats*). And “demonstrations of support” are not limited, specifically, to inauguration celebrations.

(*A fact that ought to be noted by the individual who recently implied that “the ‘birther’ movement” was one of “The Republicans”, as opposed to being limited to some, mainly fringe, Republicans and at least some non-Republicans as well).

I characterized your coverage of the protests against President Trump as “ample and glowing”. I stand by that characterization. I do not consider it inherently negative.

And, to conclude, based on said coverage thus far that I have seen, I maintain that it is quite reasonable to question what your coverage would be like of any pro-Trump events (should any local ones come to pass) and how it would compare to the coverage that you have done thus far.

I’m concerned that the people Trump is surrounding himself with also minimize the threat that Russia poses to the United States. You’re obviously too young to have lived through the Cold War. Indeed. The same people who blamed the right for the Cold War and argued for a live and let live policy toward the Soviets (and, in many cases, were apologists for –if not outright supporters of– Stalin, the greatest mass murderer in history.) Now that Russia is led by an unapologetic White, Christian, nationalist and traditionalist, they’re ready to start a new Cold War and recklessly and completely needlessly take us to the brink of a nuclear showdown.

Scott – you have no idea what you are talking about. The level of danger that Russia represents is obviously more than your small brain can handle. This is absolute fact, not a “liberal Democrat” opinion.

Oh, please.

Russia is only a threat to us if we continue to meddle into their affairs and needlessly and stupidly provoke them. As Trump said at his first press conference, if Putin likes him, that’s an asset, not a liability.

carelessness at allowing him to have any dirt on him

{rolls eyes again}

That “dossier”?

The balance of probability, though, has to be that the whole thing is fake. There are plain factual errors in the file; and the activities Trump is supposed to have paid for from the FSB honey traps are seriously atypical for the man, as he himself pointed out at his Wednesday press conference. The file probably started its life as a clumsy disinformation effort by Trump’s political enemies here in the States.

( Revenge of the spooks )

Thanks, though, to you and to Cyrus, as well, for providing a prime example of exactly what I was referring-to in my previous post in this sub-thread. On Russia, Democrats are now the new John Birchers.
