Before Charles Percier designed furniture and interiors for Napoleon Bonaparte, he supervised the creation of theatrical stage sets for the Paris Opera. Bard Graduate Center invites children and their caretakers to explore Percier’s dramatic imagination on an educator-led tour of Charles Percier: Architecture and Design in an Age of Revolutions, then create colorful and expressive masks for their own performance in our studio. Characters from both ancient Greek drama and Charles Percier’s own social world come alive through folding, curling, ripping, and layering paper. Who will you be? Tragedy or comedy, an artist or an empress?

Malou Zuidema is an illustrator and teaching artist from the Netherlands and is based in New York City. Her work is characterized as hand-made, quirky, and colorful. She believes that playfulness is at the core of art-making as it supports learning new skills and techniques while having fun. To view more of her work, please visit www.malouzuidema.com

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
