Next spring, you can come back to this:
Wonderful! This is exactly the kind of act-locally project I need to reset my attitude after this week. Will be there. Thanks for posting, WSR.
This is wonderful – thank you for posting, WSR. I’ll be there on Saturday to help put some beauty back into the world.
I will be there tomorrow! Do we need to bring anything (gloves, etc.) or will all gardening supplies be provided?
Some of these volunteers are lovely – some are very territorial and often don’t want help at all. A couple of them (not all) are NOT kid friendly and are quite nasty to kids. Just a warning because they have advertised that older kids may join however some volunteers don’t want them there at all. otherwise, the gardens are beautiful and they do a great service.
Please keep your negativity to yourself. Are you so bored that you troll blogs about gardening and take the time to spread negativity? The volunteers at this garden represent a wide cross section of NYC. If you feel people need a warning before planting tulips, you must really live a sheltered life. I’m a parent of toddlers who not only love the garden, but have the social skills to participate in events there without hesitation. The same can’t be said about you, based on your post.
Why is he a troll because he’s telling the truth? I took the dog for a walk and had 2 kids with me on the way to a playdate. I stopped by to ask if they still needed help and a woman started ranting about me bringing them along. This may be a cross section of UWSers but it doesn’t mean these type of people don’t exist. Your post is negative and hostile.
HelenD- I have never posted a comment before. I was compelled to because the idiocy of warning people about bringing children to a community garden really resonated with me. People who love to complain will always find an outlet. I preferred when West Side Rag did away with comments entirely to avoid giving a voice to miserable people. Your comment is so typical on blogs like this. The Westside Community Garden is a wonderful place with very hard working, dedicated and friendly volunteers. I have been a member for over 10 years and my children and all the children I’ve met there love to visit and give their time and energy to such an idyllic spot. Negativity is contagious, and you are spreading it around as much as the next person. Calling someone out on their negativity is not more of the same. It’s obviously troubling to you because you can’t see the forest through the trees.
It’s troubling to me that someone felt they had to chastise me for bringing a dog and kids along to ask if they needed help. No need to write a speech about it.
It doesn’t really matter though because this lot is going to be turned into a big luxury condo building in about 18 months.
Sorry.
Love the garden and the volunteers do a great job but kids were being directed to “help” plant outside the garden in the areas around the trees on the sidewalk where dogs relieve themselves. We came to help but decided the health and safety of our toddler was more important so we left.
