The Parks Department cut the ribbon on a new playground and turf field on 60th Street between West End and Amsterdam Avenue. The Gertrude Ederle Playground, just outside the rec center and pool of the same name, was funded with $4.3 million developers and $884,000 from the city.

It’s got “play equipment for different age groups, a synthetic turf field for open play, a sitting area for adults, and plantings,” the parks department says.

Community Board 7 District Manager Penny Ryan and former chair Mel Wymore were big proponents of the playground, built on the former site of a pool. And Gale Brewer

Gertrude Ederle, a German immigrant, was an Olympic gold medalist and the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
