Vehicles on Riverside Drive between 99th and 100th street were vandalized overnight Friday, with windows broken, doors bashed, and tires slashed.
Thieves have targeted Riverside in the past, prompting police to increase patrols and place floodlights in the area. The 24th precinct had reported a decrease in criminal activity after those initial efforts a couple of years ago, but problems appear to be cropping up again. In February, a repeat offender was arrested for break-ins in the area and police had said they’d be increasing partols.
“At least 13 cars vandalized on Riverside Drive near 99th St. Heard there were others on Thursday night also. Windows broken, items stolen, tires slashed. Break-ins have been a problem for a long time in this area, but recently getting worse and more malicious. Area needs permanent surveillance cameras and additional night time NYPD patrols,” said our tipster, who sent in the photos above and below.
The paint on my somewhat shabby car parked on the west side of Riverside Drive at 98th was given a deep, deliberate gouge over the weekend.
I am sorry to hear that. I had my car parked on RSD at 98 from Thursday until today. I hope that people in the RSD buildings facing RSD permit those floodlights to be restored for the benefit of their neighbors.
Ugh! This stretch of Riverside is notorious. I’d love to know why.
There is no visibility on to RSD on that stretch.
I hope our neighborhood police precinct does a better job handling this crime spree than a time in the past when this happened on w 98 between Broadway and Amsterdam (as well as on Amsterdam just N and S of this intersection.) Police informed me more than 19 cars were vandalized in less than a week. I had fingerprints and blood on my car but detectives wouldn’t investigate because they treated each car independently and the cost/damage was too low to warrant time into finding the suspected perpetrator! Our tax dollars at work! HA
Just passed a car with a broken passenger side window between 81st and 82nd Street on the east side of Riverside Drive. Beware, these thugs are heading south apparently.
The first time I lived on the UWS (late 50’s-1981) you took your chances of losing stuff kept in your car. Gratuitous damage, such as tire slashing, I don’t recall hearing about. I guess Bernie’s people are really angry.
AND WHERE ARE THE HOMELESS SHELTERS??? 97TH STREET????
actually, there are no homeless shelters on 97th street.
Last year my car was vandalized on Broadway @106th – 107th. My husband is handicapped (lost leg) and can park on the street side where the “chosen ones get to park” i.e. no one else but bus and construction workers…a joke…we lost a lot of good stuff from car as cars have not been broken into for years….well not anymore! And nothing was really covered except the window they broke. The took a $265.00 invisible fence collar for our dog….hope he’s sporting it! Morons! So annoying all of it! A neighbors car windw was smashed the same day on 106 between Broadway. Probably same person. Aiyiyi – we need to fix this Lucy!
These are low life thugs. There jealous S O B
who dont work and nothing else to do except doing drugs. Have to remember they were abuse children and dont ave any thing and made we do !! ha
some years ago they used to like stealing the taillights from my Honda Civic.
Then the police would give my parked car a ticket because it was missing a taillight.
Theris zero police presence on the streets of the UWS–especially at night.
This police-bashing will not work well. Good luck out there without Police protections. Be safe.
The same issue happens on CPW by the natural history museum. There should be police cameras and better lighting in these low foot traffic areas
The residents along RSD and CPW objected to the police and the increased lighting was removed. We can’t get neighborly cooperation and that’s a problem. Just read the Comments like these:
“Theris zero police presence on the streets of the UWS–especially at night.”
If you park your car on Riverside or CPW, it’s going to get broken into. This is as old as time itself. Park it in one of the cheap garages on 108th and Amsterdam they’re tying to tear down. They’ve been a hidden secret for years wih their rates if you need them. Otherwise park it away from the park.
I agree regarding RSD, we stopped parking there years ago.
oh, oh
