Cathedralhenge is the special phenomenon when the rising sun crosses in front of the archangel Gabriel at the top of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine when viewed from Scott Matthews’ window on Broadway and 106th street.
Scott documents this phenomenon every year. And this year, he got to take a picture of a special guest. A bird, which Scott said appeared to be a hawk, landed right on Gabriel’s horn as the sun rose. This would not be the first time a hawk perched on the horn.
See some more photos below.
(Manhattanhenge, by comparison, occurs when the sun lines up perfectly with the street grid, and it can be viewed from most wide East-West blocks in the city, not just from Scott’s apartment.)
Update: Scott got another great shot of the hawk on Saturdy morning using a telescope:
Those pics are amazing. What timing! Thank you, Scott for sharing.
But can we come hang out at Scott’s apartment for Manhattanhenge?
Great idea! Scott really shouldn’t be taunting us with his view unless he plans to throw a WSR cocktail party. I’ll chip in and make some canapes…
Beautiful. Thank you Scott.
