Fun/disturbing fact: researchers at Weill Cornell have mapped the bedbug genome, and found differences between bedbugs found on the West side of Manhattan and those found on the East side. If anyone would like to write a parody about the distinct differences between the bedbugs, please do so. Because there is much opportunity for hilarity here.
Or just add some comments, gripes, suggestions about neighborhood happenings below.
Can any dog owners/walkers explain why dog owners/walkers feel like they don’t have to pick up their dog’s poop when there is snow on the ground? The amount of dog poop (fresh and drying out) on the sidewalks and in parks (Riverside Park, Roosevelt Park) in the last week has been absurd. I have taken my two sons for several walks during this time and the feces is everywhere. Navigating through it has been as difficult as avoiding tourists in Times Square.
Anyone else notice this?
Dog owners/walkers, any thoughts?
Thanks.
I’m on a dog owner and I cannot understand why anyone leaves their dog’s poop on the sidewalk. I can explain why some people can’t curb their dogs – I have been trying to train mine for some time, one gets it, the other doesn’t. I also know that they should not “use” the tree beds, but the non-curbed dog insists on dirt. As I walk, I ponder how to make it work for both dogs and everyone else, and don’t have an idea yet. I realize that the filth problem that exists makes it hard to think sympathetically about the dogs’ needs, and for those who don’t “get” the need for dogs it probably seems pointless, but it just seems there ought to be a better solution for everyone that could let everyone enjoy a cleaner city while allowing dogs to do their business without excessive challenge to their owners.
None of which changes the fact that in the real world that currently exists, dog owners must clean up after their dogs!
Rob, Yes!
It’d disgusting how the snow means no one has to pick up their dog poop, their trash, or anything for that matter. It makes winters in the city unbearable.
Please UPW-Siders, use dematious earth to kill those bugs. It works! Google it… Share it with your neighbors…
How do you use that for bedbugs? You can’t really put it on the bed. Do you just put it around the perimeter of the room and sweep it up later?
diatomaceous
I have two dogs. And am always picking up after others. Often the owner is on the phone and disregards the actions and needs of the dog. No big deal- I don’t want to step in it either. But don’t understand the snow thing- not just dog poop but all kinds of trash. I am a volunteer gardener in CP. We seldom encounter this dog problem when raking, planting Etc but when the snow comes it’s a different story. Pisses me off big time!
There is no way that those East Side bed bugs are going to set foot west of Central Park!
So they will figure that out…but not how to keep the bedbugs from breeding.
Can’t seem to access the bedbug article.
As for poop, it’s really disgusting. We have 2 dogs and I not only ALWAYS pick up our own poop, I often pick up other dog’s poop if I see it nearby. No idea idea why people leave more poop during snowy days — I’ve often wondered, is it just that we see it more because of the white snow? Once in a blue moon, when the snow is REALLY deep, a poop can disappear into the snow and make it really hard to find, but that can’t account for all of the poop that seems to fill up the streets these days. I wish the traffic cops who put parking tickets on the cars would also ticket the people who leave their poop for the rest of us (and our dogs!) to step in.
I think you may be on to something about the white snow making the poop more visible.
I am astounded by the amount of un scooped poop ALL YEAR ROUND!
Dear dog owners: if you can’t be bothered to clean up after your dog, you don’t deserve to have one!

The east side bedbugs were found to have better posture and a silkier, shinier carapace
The Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue residents would never
admit that they have bedbugs…and the east side bed bugs
would never admit that humans sleep in heir home.
On the Upper East Side, the bed bugs are groomed well before they are 5 minutes old to ensure that they have the grace and manner to feast on the skin of humans at night.
Meanwhile, on the Upper West Side, the bed bugs are taught to protest the rapid expansion of bike lanes, anger over the lack of decent Chinese Restaurants, and then unwillingly feast on the skin of humans well before nightfall shortly before watching several hours of Parks and Recreations on Netflix.
The bed bugs on the east side are mainly the white kind of bugs.
They travel on weekends to the Hamptons by Jitney,
And come back a bit darker from their stay in the sun.
The bed bugs on the west side are mainly the darker kind of bugs.
Some wear tiny yarmulkas, some have lbeards, some read books, and all are better fed.
Lucien, you are awesome. My coworker could not figure out why I was snorting with laughter.

These dog owners are truly disgusting. Can you imagine what their apartments look like?? AGHHH!! and the smell??? Jesus help them.
What is it going to take for this to be an issue that is addressed?? A serious public health emergency? And don’t call me an animal hater or whatever. I would just like to be able to walk down the street without having to look at dog excrement all over the place. It is just gross and disgusting and know this….I am staring at you all, rolling my eyes and judging you as hard as I can.
Filthy…now I feel like taking a shower.
you guys are hilarious!!!!
remember that the West Side Bed Bug speak
few languages and travel abroad a lot, don’t
go to the Hamptons and have many foreign
encounters….
It’s hard to remember that, though, since I live on the UWS and go to the Hamptons lol
Regarding the dog poop comments…
Seems like the amount of dog poop on the streets of UWS has really increased over the past couple of years – at the same time that the UWS has become more affluent.
What’s happening?
Why not just have your dog poop on newspaper so that the poop never touches the sidewalk. Then fold it up, place in plastic bag and discard properly. Something has to be done. These dog owners are a joke.
