The Parks Department has cancelled Saturday’s Winter Jam festival because of the impending blizzard coming our way Friday and Saturday.
Each year, the city makes fake snow for the event, which allows people to try skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and sledding in an area of the park near the Bandshell.
But with up to a foot of snow expected by Saturday, the event is off.
“Due to an active blizzard watch and citywide hazardous travel advisory notice, Winter Jam 2016 is cancelled and will not be rescheduled. Please visit nyc.gov/severeweather or call 311 for storm updates.”
Gothamist reports that the Parks Department had already been making snow since Tuesday.
Don’t worry, there will still be plenty of opportunities for winter fun! Check out our list of the best local places to go sledding.

I saw them out there early this morning making it in Sheep’s Meadow and I wondered why they were bothering. What a waste of time, effort & money…the blizzard’s been in the forecast for days.
The blizzard may have been in the forecast for days but that does not mean that we will get much snow. How many times has the forecast been completely off base? I am still betting that this will not be much of a storm. The Winter Jam has always been a wonderful event for city kids. It is a shame that the City will not reschedule it.
Best. Headline. Ever.
Better than “Ford to City: Drop Dead,” “Headless Body in Topless Bar,” or “Sticks Nix Hick Pix?” I think not.
Okay to be more precise, best West Side Rag headline ever.
Agreed!
That I can agree with.
Ditto!
Wouldn’t this even be even better with all the real snow in the forecast? It’s not like anyone needs to drive to Central Park, so it doesn’t seem like safety should be a big issue. How dumb.
you must not have attended this event in the past. a lot goes into the setup and vendors from all over the area come down and set up tents and booths. it’s not just a frolic in the snow. good of the city to cancel it, if only so that the vendors don’t sink in more costs to attend an event in unsafe or undesirable conditions
nelson, no storm is going to replicate the snowscapes that get created for this event. not a waste of time, money or effort. this is what goes into creating a “ski-slope” in Central Park.
And 50 mph winds might have had some impact on this decision. Postponing would have been better. It really is a fun event.
A city of candy-asses. Period.
Huh?
nature makes us green.
The Onion could not have said it better! Children (of all ages) will finally get to build snow-images and The Park will again glow magically with the forms of winter folk, real and imagined…
they should just reschedule to Sunday when they’ll have some actual real snow.
Is it cancelled because the rich family’s nanny’s will not be able to take their kids to this event in bad weather?
