subway waiting

The MTA is shutting the 1 train down for the weekend to perform maintenance work, but the 2 and 3 trains will make local stops from Chambers to 96th street, and shuttle buses will be available above 96th.

Read the full advisory below. (And in other transit-related news, Columbus Avenue will be closed between 66th and 86th street on Sunday for a street fair, so move your car by midnight on Saturday.)

From 11:30 p.m. Friday, September 18 to 5:00 a.m. Monday, September 21, 1 Subway Line Icon trains will be suspended along the entire line between Van Cortlandt Park-242 St and South Ferry in both directions to accommodate significant maintenance work at multiple locations along the line.

During this service suspension, workers will take advantage of the 24/7 access to complete brick arch repairs at 168 St and 181 St, repairs in the vicinity of 125 St, track panel installation north of 215 St and ongoing Hurricane Sandy recovery work at the South Ferry station. 2 Subway Line Icon3 Subway Line Icon trains will run local between Chambers St and 96 St, and A Subway Line IconC Subway Line Icon trains as well as M3, M100 and free shuttle buses will provide alternate service at the ends of the line. Customers traveling on the 1 Subway Line Icon line this weekend are strongly encouraged to use the following travel alternatives and station transfers/connections:

  • For service between South Ferry and Chambers St, use free shuttle buses. Transfer between 2 Subway Line Icon3 Subway Line Icon trains and buses at Chambers St. 2 Subway Line Icon and 3 Subway Line Icon trains run local in both directions between Chambers St and 96 St, replacing 1 Subway Line Icon service.
  • For service between 96 St and 168 St, use free shuttle buses or the A Subway Line IconC Subway Line Icon at nearby stations.
  • For service between 168 St and 191 St, use M3 or free shuttle buses. Or, use the A Subway Line Icon at nearby stations.
  • For Dyckman St, use M100 (free shuttle buses overnight) to/from the Dyckman St A Subway Line Icon station. Transfer between 2 Subway Line Icon3 Subway Line Icon and A Subway Line Icon trains at 59 St-Columbus Circle.
  • For 207 St, use the nearby A Subway Line Icon station, and transfer between 2 Subway Line Icon3 Subway Line Icon and A Subway Line Icon trains at 59 St-Columbus Circle.
  • For service between 207 St and Van Cortlandt Park-242 St, take free shuttle buses. Transfer between buses and A Subway Line Icon trains at 207 St and between A Subway Line Icon and 2 Subway Line Icon3 Subway Line Icon trains at 59 St-Columbus Circle.
  • 3 Subway Line Icon service operates between Chambers St and 148 St overnight.

The ongoing work on the 1 Subway Line Icon line is absolutely critical in order to provide safe, reliable service into the future. We understand that these service disruptions are inconvenient to the customers who depend on the 1 Subway Line Icon train and we appreciate their patience while we complete these important projects. This work is being performed simultaneously during the weekend when ridership is lowest to reduce the impact to our customers.

To ensure that our customers are well-informed of this service suspension and alternative travel options, service notices will be posted in all stations along the 1 Subway Line Icon line and announcements will be made in stations and onboard all 1 Subway Line Icon trains. Brochures are also available in both Spanish and English. The most up-to-date information on MTA service status is always available at www.mta.info. For immediate notice of service changes, sign up for email or text alerts at www.mymtaalerts.com. For weekend subway service changes, visit www.mta.info/weekender.

If you are heading up to Westchester this weekend and were planning to take the 1 train to 225th street in order to take the Metro North Hudson line at Marble Hill – a block from the 225th street station- you need to rethink your plans. You can take the Hudson line trains from Harlem 125th street or Grand Central instead.

Gotta wish all our Citibike stations were up and running. It looks like great weather for riding this weekend.

I just signed up for Citibike. They opened a station near my apartment. Looking forward to trying it!

Thanks for the heads up and work-arounds. If you’re new to the city you may not know that MTA also offers a text notification system for public transportation, street traffic and Planned Service Changes which you can tweak to your preference, and can place a hold on notifications when you, say, go on vacation. Here’s the link: https://www.mymtaalerts.com/LoginC.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f
