For anyone concerned that they’ve lost their favorite liquor store and one of the best neon signs in the neighborhood, fear not. Mitchell’s on 86th street simply had a “licensing issue” and plans to reopen soon. Thanks to Debra and Isabel for tips and photos.
We are aware that the reply button on the comment form is broken on mobile (it's ok on desktop) and we are working on fixing it ASAP! Thanks for your patience!
What a relief!Though it still sounds a little suspect. I’m not completely reassured, but much more hopeful!
I believe Rowan & Martin would classify this under “The Fickle Finger of Fate!”
I tried looking on the SLA website but didn’t find much. It might be nothing up to their lisc was pulled/suspended for something like selling to minors. SLA regularly runs stings.I find it hard to believe that its just a paperwork issue. But only time will tell what the story is.
I took a look at the NY State SLA website and did not find much info on this store.
Their “lisc issues” response is quite odd.
If your in biz you don’t let your lisc to sell alcohol lapse, or any lisc needed to operate your biz. The SLA regularly runs stings of small stores/bars to see if they will sell to minors and/or are checking ID’s.
When that happens they suspend the store and/or bars lisc for a period of time.
This is ONLY a possibility in this case, but I would like to know what “lisc issue” they are having.
Watch “The Days of Wine and Roses”. Booze!
Info from the NYS Liquor Authority website – Public License Query. Mitchell’s license is listed as expired. That appears to be the license issue they are having.

Thanks for the info
But it begs the question, who do you not get
the renewal done months in advance?
There more to this i think
They were probably working very hard to get their lisc renewed on time, but only at the last minute realized there was no such thing and that it was their *license* that needed renewing.
Good research!
Thank you. I just thought the facts should be posted, to offset the previous conjecture.
