The Central Park Conservancy is hosting its annual outdoor movie series this coming week, and it’s paying homage to a special year: 1980.
That’s the year the conservancy began, and it’s also the year that these five fine flicks made their debut:
Tuesday, Aug 25: Fame (R)
Wednesday, Aug 26: The Blues Brothers (R)
Thursday, Aug 27: Airplane! (PG)
Friday, Aug 28: Raging Bull (R)
Saturday, Aug 29: Superman II (PG)
The movies take place on the lawn between Sheep Meadow and the 72nd Street Cross Drive (Terrace Drive) and start at 8, though the gates open at 6:30 p.m.
The conservancy adds:
Films will screen rain or shine. A DJ will perform from 6:30 — 8:00 pm.
The Film Festival is free. Tickets are not required.
All films are open captioned. Bring a picnic and a blanket.
To ensure that everyone can enjoy the films, the following are not permitted:
Alcoholic beverages
Glass bottles
Chairs
Video cameras
Tape recorders
Can’t wait, I hope the humidity goes away before then.
Although, I’m a little bit bummed I can’t bring my tape recorder. Sure, it’s clunky and all, but jeez, talk about restrictive.
I recorded a piece of last years film “Rear Window” just to see how it would come out on the iPhone. No issues with Security.
Ha! I was being facetious. It seems like an archaic request in this day & age to ask for no “tape recorders” or “video cameras” since 99.9% of people have a smartphone that they can use to record. No need to lug around a cassette recorder or video camera 🙂
tape recorders and video cameras? Seems as if the organizer is of old age and still stuck in the 80s…or they are being a little tongue in cheek 😉
Ah, I love Fame. It’s a little dated but captures the exuberance of young artists trying to perfect their craft. The wonderful Irene Cara steals the show.
Wow — one of these films is VERY unlike the others! While (by current standards) most could be considered “family-friendly” classics of the 80s, “Raging Bull” — an undeniable classic for all times — happens to be extremely family un-friendly. (Jake: “Let me ask you something: you f@ck my wife?” etc). It’s a masterpiece, but feels a tad incongruous for an outdoor film in the park. Not that I really care, myself. But some might be in for a wee surprise with their wee lads and lasses.
That aside, be warned — some of these films are pretty long, and without a chair, could make for sore backs (especially for those, like me, who enjoyed these films in the theater back in the day!) —
The Blues Brothers: 2h 28m
Fame: 2h 15m
Raging Bull: 2h 9m
Superman II: 2h 7m
Airplane!: 1h 28m (sounds perfect to me!)
This is the funniest string of comments I have ever seen! Yes! Tape recorders! And I agree: Raging Bull? Family friendly? But, yes a great movie.
