The Village Voice caught up with the sucker adventurous young man who signed the lease on the notorious 100-square foot apartment at 114 West 71st street. He’s a friendly Wisconionite who works at a restaurant in Lincoln Center (apparently at Lincoln, from a souvenir pen in the video).

No doubt some people in UWS pay less than this gentleman for a much larger space and are able to rationalize it.

“rationalize it”? what does that mean?

Does this “apartment” have a window? There appears to be skylight.
Does its size meet the qualifications of the New York City Housing Maintenance Code?
If not, is it legal to rent it? If not, how come it’s being rented openly.

Exactly what I was wondering! How can the city expect anyone to live in a box…and it’s still not that cheap! Ugh.

So it didn’t just serve as an address for parents to zone their kids into PS 199, as some had speculated.

With the exposure that he received both here and in the Village Voice, he’ll will have better living options soon.

It’s nice to share a laugh at this, BUT someone needs to step up to the plate and get this fellow an apartment that he can afford. It’s shameful that 100 square feet is considered rentable! Try sectioning off 100 feet in your apt.and see how much you enjoy it!

It is a shame — and no one is laughing. But I have to assume (unfortunately) that this closet violates no laws, or we would have heard about it.

He is young. I know what that is like: I was once thrilled with a basement space, just because it was in the city with the statue of liberty that embraced us all.

He is probably ambitious and not preoccupied with his space (even when he’s stifling without a window), but excited about his new life, meeting people, carving a future.

I’m hoping (especially with the exposure that he has gotten) that he will soon meet someone and get a chance to change his living accommodations.

He is adorable and I love his attitude. That said, I do not envy him.
