The Chipotle at 110th and Broadway was closed by the Health Department on Monday for a wide variety of violations, including holding foods at the wrong temperature and having flies. In August the Chipotle on 72nd and Amsterdam was also shuttered by the DOH. The 110th street Chipotle has generally had decent health scores, aside from receiving 50 violation points last May. A score of 28 or above earns restaurants a C grade.
The list of violations is below:
Sanitary Violations
1) Cold food item held above 41º F (smoked fish and reduced oxygen packaged foods above 38 ºF) except during necessary preparation.
2) Raw, cooked or prepared food is adulterated, contaminated, cross-contaminated, or not discarded in accordance with HACCP plan.
3) Appropriately scaled metal stem-type thermometer or thermocouple not provided or used to evaluate temperatures of potentially hazardous foods during cooking, cooling, reheating and holding.
4) Filth flies or food/refuse/sewage-associated (FRSA) flies present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas. Filth flies include house flies, little house flies, blow flies, bottle flies and flesh flies. Food/refuse/sewage-associated flies include fruit flies, drain flies and Phorid flies.
5) Insufficient or no refrigerated or hot holding equipment to keep potentially hazardous foods at required temperatures.
6) Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and/or allowing vermin to exist.
7) Non-food contact surface improperly constructed. Unacceptable material used. Non-food contact surface or equipment improperly maintained and/or not properly sealed, raised, spaced or movable to allow accessibility for cleaning on all sides, above and underneath the unit.
All fast food or fast casual places lose a little something when they arrive in Manhattan. These places are always cleaner and nicer in the burbs. Even trader joes and whole foods have lost thier luster to some degree. The staff has become a little surley and less friendly and helpful .
That is a fact. Makes one wonder for sure. But hey, once those folks get a bump in pay to $15/hr I’m sure things will be alright and spiffy!
The $15 minimum wage is not close to passage here in New York City. I’m wondering why you’ve chosen to make this gratuitous comment.
Another empty storefront to attract tags and fun stuff
Chipotle might be tasty for “fast food,” but to call it’s certainly not authentic Mexican. The ONLY thing I miss about living in Los Angeles was the quality of Mexican cuisine. I haven’t found any place in NYC that can compare. Any suggestions to help me out?
Roosevelt Ave in Queens for real Mexican – so authentic that you have to order in Spanish.
Have you tried Cafe Frida, on Columbus? It’s a little bit upscale.
Two “cheap eat” places are on the subway: el Atoradero in the Bronx (very low key place, like a Mexican bodega) and Tortilleria Nixtamal in Queens.
Thanks, everyone, for these suggestions — and for the commenter who initially asked about this.
How much do you want to bet that on the West Coast version of the WSR, commenters are lamenting the lack of good, NY bagels in CA?
NYC will probably never come close to LA in terms of Mexican food, but the situation is definitely improving. You may want to try a few of the places on 9th Ave: Tehuitzingo and Tulcingo del Valle. More on the UWS, the cart that’s on the east side of Broadway and 70th is a good option. I also like the taco place in Chelsea market.

From San Diego, been here 10+ years. Only a few places really have authentic Mexican food, of course all by SoCal transplants. Los Tacos no 1 in Chelsea Market is by far the best – and they have horchata! Calexio is good as well. Sadly not much on the UWS. Taqueria y Fonda on 108 and Amsterdam is my go to for delivery in the area when I’m In a pinch.
My only suggestion would be head for Tucson. NYC is a Mexican food desert.
The one on West 83 on B’way was closed yesterday as well. However, not sure why?
Come on, it’s the Flies that make it taste so good! So now where’s one to get actual Mexican-like food in NYC? I mean, the nearest Chilis is like in New Jersey or something. And the real mexican places are scary. Except for that crockamolley. That and a Corona with a lemon are pretty good.
Good riddance! They are all dumps!
I live on 83rd and Amsterdam where there is a Chipotle.
Every single morning, there is garbage in front of the restaurant on the corner. I have taken photos and sent to the community board manager. I have complained to the restaurant manager. Nothing has worked.
Recommendations???
Yes. Move!
Find a corporate email address on their website. I actually had occasion to contact them, and they were incredibly responsive!
The worst burrito that I have ever eaten in my life came from Chipotle on Amsterdam and 72nd St.
I don’t understand how that chain exists.
I’ve never found any good Mexican food in the UWS or NYC for that matter.
If the disgusting way they maintained their frontage was any indication of how clean their kitchen was, then I guessing “not so much.” Many times when they tossed out the evening’s garbage, the bags would rip open and spill on the sidewalk and no one there would bother to clean it up.
Truth.
Burrito box on 9th btw 57&58 best Mexican for nostalgic west coasters
You have GOT to try this one:
https://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/zagat/2015/04/3/zagat–javelina-brings-true-tex-mex-flavor-to-nyc.html
I has been full since the day it opened, no matter what time of day or night or day of the week! No Taco Bell there – it’s the real thing!!
before you run to Javelina check out Pete Wells’ review:

TL;DR: it sucks
Ooop, I meant IT has been full…. 🙂
People love to say they can’t get good mexican food like they can back home in such a such. Bla bla bla. In NYC there must be 10,000 Mexican restaurants and carts. Have you really tried them all?! Have you gone to Nixtamal in Queens? La Morada in the Bronx? What about the many many places in Spanish Harlem? Anyway, the thing that makes me sick about Chipotle was watching one open right next to a long standing family Mexican Restaurant in midtown. Once they opened, the family place was empty and chipotle always full. Guess what. No more family place. Ya get the crap you deserve if you don’t make an effort to find good food and patronize their businesses.
Check out a family owned restaurant “Casa Mexicana” I think it’s the best one in the UWS.. It is quite hard to find a good one :-/
