This isn’t an Upper West Side story per se, but several locals had their eyes glued to a massive fire raging on the other side of the Hudson River on Wednesday night. A four-story apartment complex in Edgewater burned throughout the night, and appeared to be completely destroyed by 8 p.m. The Daily News said that there were no reports of injuries.

“Firefighters battling the blaze reported it remaining out of control as of 8:30 p.m., with it first breaking out at 4:20 p.m.

No injuries to civilians or firefighters have been reported.”

A Columbia student told us they could see the fire from the dorms. Here are some photos from the neighborhood and from New Jersey.

Welp, it’s an Upper West Side story now. I woke up to smoke in my bedroom, then went outside to see fire engines traveling up and down the neighborhood. Pretty intense smoke from this terrible fire.

Thanks, Avi, for posting this and to TG for mentioning this. I’m in a rear-facing apartment on West End and my entire apartment smells like smoke.

When my kids and I left for school this morning I said look, it’s snowing! Then I smelled the smoke and realized we were seeing ashes.

That explains the smell of smoke entering our bedroom late last night and lasting all morning…

Thanks!

The smell of smoke was heavy in Central Park this morning, even on the east side. Clothes smelled awful afterwards

Is that why it is so smokey on UWS this morning?

Was this a development under construction? I heard it was set off by a worker’s blowtorch. ( CBS 880 News ).
