Coffee, mustard, seasonal American food, Middle Eastern fare and more are on the menu at the new and upcoming Upper West Side businesses we feature below.
That coffee shop we’ve been hearing about that’s moving into the old Blimpie space on 97th and Broadway is called Earth Cafe (photo above). Thanks to Lisa Bergtraum and Ruby for the tips.
A $10 or less store called Ten Below is set to open on Broadway between 100th and 101st, the former home of Sterling Optical. Whatever happened to just calling it a $1 store and then selling stuff for more than $1? Thanks to Ruby for the tip and photo.
A new blinds shop called NY City Blinds is opening at 2673 Broadway between 101st and 102nd street. Thanks to Ruby for the tip.
The Radio Shack on 94th and Broadway is closing as a new Radio Shack is opening on Broadway between 96th and 97th. Thanks to Linda Rosenthal for the tip.
It turns out that mustard shop we talked about that’s moving into the old Jalapeno space is a real French spot. We actually got the tip straight from Paris a couple of months ago and forgot! It’s called Maille, and they distribute all over the world.
“Straight from the Maille boutique on Place Madeleine in Paris today Friday 29 August: Maille shop is opening on Columbus and 67th St in November.
I asked a cousin on vacation this week in Paris to pick up some mustard for us and they told her just a few hours ago about the opening of their first US shop on the UWS.
3rd official Maille place to buy their products outside of Paris; others in London and Montreal. Fifth one worldwide to date. Otherwise products available at places like supermarkets, West Side Market, etc are limited. Product availability also limited in Montreal as I found out 3 weeks ago.”
The Milling Room, a restaurant in the former space of Corvo Bianco on Columbus between 82nd and 83rd street, opened a few days ago (we had thought it was going to be called The End.) The Times says it’s a “seasonal American restaurant” and the decor is muted grays. “Restaurateur Luis Gonzalez has installed a large pizza oven… removed the banquettes, and put his waitstaff in edgy black Converse sneakers for the new incarnation. Gonzalez will also be installing LED lights around the room’s large skylight,” according to Eater. Thanks to Kevin for the tip and photo.
The Halal Guys, a Middle Eastern restaurant based on a popular midtown food cart, looks like it’s getting close to opening on 95th and Amsterdam. We first wrote about it here. Thanks to Jason for the photo.
