CRUMBS SET TO REOPEN ON COLUMBUS AVENUE; NEW MENU COMING

Cupcake shop Crumbs is reopening its Columbus Square location after being purchased out of bankruptcy by businessmen intent on resuscitating the brand. Crumbs, a chain founded on the Upper West Side in 2003, closed all its shops in July and filed for bankruptcy. The shop that’s reopening is on Columbus Avenue around 98th street.

“CNBC TV personality Marcus Lemonis, who hosts a show that tries to turn around failing businesses, and Dippin’ Dots owner Fischer Enterprises LLC won a bankruptcy auction for the chain with a $6.5 million bid,” the Post reported.

The new location will serve cupcakes but is also expanding its offerings, the Post says. It’s not clear what the new offerings will be. A Daily News report noted that Lemonis is “an investor in several treats companies, including Key Lime Pie Co., Mr. Green Tea Ice Cream and Sweet Pete’s Candy. These brands, as well as Dippin’ Dots, might possibly be incorporated into Crumbs.”

This is one of the first Crumbs to reopen — the owners plan to reopen 28 of the 49 locations that were closed. It’s not clear yet whether the other UWS locations will reopen.

Uh-uh, not quite!

With Crumbs reincarnated, plus “Baked By Melissa” plus “Magnolia” plus “16 (Love) Handles” plus “It’s Sugar” plus all the French bakeries — the “long national nightmare OF EPIDEMIC OBESITY is taking hold on the (formerly trim-and-fit) UWS!!

Walk up (or down) Broadway and you’re sure to see several specimens as large as NFL Quarterbacks.

And then there’s the overweight men, also!

Oh please. Obesity is a disease. By your comment you announce to all your ignorance of this fact. It isn’t about the shops and stores and certainly not the people afflicted with obesity. It’s about finding ways to cure the illness. Why do you so much disdain for people afflicted as such? Try to be more charitable and understanding. You’ll feel better in the long run.

Really?! Obesity a disease? Very few obese people actually have a physical condition that causes them to be fat. Perhaps it’s a symptom of some other disease, such as a depression, but in the end it’s a choice. One cupcake does not make you obese. Two or five everyday, combined with all the other crap we feed ourselves does. Do not kid yourself. The obesity epidemic is not caused by a disease… And a cupcake shop is not causing it either.

This is good news for former customers and for all business. Do not over extend and expand too soon. Thank you to the new owner who knows the brand and will recapture a great UWS biz that grew too big too fast. Ignore the Stuart’s of the world who post BFD. There will always be pessimists and sourpusses out there.

Crumbs needed to die, before it killed society with diabetes and obesity. A single cupcake contained approximately 50% of one’s daily caloric intake, and four times the RDA of sugar. All that casually consumed as a colorful afternoon treat.
Sorry to see it’s back with little consideration for smarter choices.
