Maya Angelou, the activist and writer who died on Thursday, lived for part of her life, on the Upper West Side. She moved into an apartment with her friend Rosa Guy in the neighborhood in 1958 and lived both on Central Park West and on Riverside Drive, according to the New York Times. I couldn’t find the exact addresses, but if anyone knows please share in the comments.
And wouldn’t it be great to put a plaque up on one of the buildings? I always love coming across those in the neighborhood.
Check out her family’s statement here, a basic timeline of her life in New York here, and the Times obituary here.
I was once in Dr. Angelou’s apartment in Park West Village on West 97St. It was probably 1970 or 1971.
She lived at 473 West End in the late 1990′ to early 2000 before buying a brownstone on 125th. Her tour bus was often parked along West End and 83rd.
