MANNES COLLEGE IS OFFERING CLASSES FOR MUSIC-LOVERS THIS SUMMER (SPONSORED)

Calling all music lovers! Mannes College The New School for Music on West 85th street has announced a series of vibrant summer classes and events through its Extension division. It’s a great chance to get to know the school and take a fun class during the summer.

Of particular note is a new offering called “Hear, There and Everywhere: Exploring Summer Music in NYC”, designed to enhance and complement the audience experience of concerts offered at many of New York City’s parks, performing arts venues, and cultural institutions this summer. Participants in this new course will learn about the pieces performed, the musicians involved, and the context and history of many kinds of music. This is a great chance to learn and discuss strategies for active listening and discover new musical worlds alongside fellow New Yorkers.

For its first time out, Mannes has chosen events at the Lincoln Center Out of Doors and Mostly Mozart Festivals, The New York Philharmonic parks concerts, The Metropolitan Opera Plazacasts and Park Concerts, BRIC Arts Media/Celebrate Brooklyn, River to River, and more! Tell a friend and register today!

Hear, There, and Everywhere is a prelude to some of the fresh and engaging offerings Mannes Extension has been rolling out in the recent past, and it will continue in the fall. The course catalog for next year includes new classes like Folk Process: American Folk Music, History of Rock Opera, World Music, 21st Century Notation, the Practical Art of DJing, and more. Add those to the long-standing offerings like chamber music coaching, The Mannes Community Orchestra, and courses in music theory and ear training and it’s clear that there is something for everyone.  The icing on the cake might just be The New School Chorus, which Mannes launched in the fall of 2013.  Led by Grammy winners Eric Dudley and Caroline Shaw (who also won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in music) this community-based music-making experience has already had an exuberant first season, with participants singing music that spans multiple continents and centuries.

In addition to Hear, There, and Everywhere there is still limited room in this summer’s piano classes, chamber ensembles,  and Untangling The Dots, a course with the aim of teaching avocational musicians to read music in a fun and active way.

Mannes Extension is working to draw in more West Side neighbors. Join them there this summer or during the academic year as a student in a class, player or singer in a group, or audience member.
