For our Upper West Side history lesson this week we head to Sheep Meadow in Central Park, where actual sheep once grazed and lazed around. The above photo is from sometime between 1900 and 1906. The photo on the bottom is from Sunday. Same basic premise, but now we graze on Whole Foods olives and cheese.

Sheep grazed in the meadow (just off of 67th street and Central Park West) from 1864 to 1934, according to the Central Park Conservancy. They were kept inside the building now known as Tavern on the Green.

The older photo is from the Library of Congress. Click below for larger versions of the same photos.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
