The owner of local Indian restaurant Swagat has launched a new restaurant on Columbus Avenue between 83rd and 84th street dedicated to health-conscious Indian cooking. Lala Sharma just opened Savoury at 489 Columbus Avenue, the former home of Lenny’s (which moved one block south).
The menu includes dishes you’d find at most Indian restaurants in the city, including Chicken Tikka and Lamb Saag, but it also has items that are more surprising, including crab cakes and sauteed scallops served with tamarind-coconut chutney. The dinner menu is here and the lunch menu is here (pdf’s)
One reader, who promises she’s not affiliated with the restaurant, says she enjoyed a recent meal at the restaurant.
“Food was delicious – spiced to our requests, hot and delicious, very flavorful. Service was great too – extremely attentive staff (at one point almost overly attentive as multiple people were checking in on us). Décor was simple and clean. Very reasonably priced – We had 2 entrees and 2 orders of naan and the bill was under $40. They don’t have a liquor license yet and are BYOB, but said they will soon.”

We got takeaway from Savoury last night. Coming from the UK we are incredibly fussy about curry and after 18 months in New York we are no closer to finding a replacement for our incredible local Indian restaurant in London!
Ignoring the UK though, Savoury is one of the better Indian meals we’ve had here. The flavour of the sauces was up there with the best I’ve had in NY but they were too watery. Some pieces of the lamb were really tender and came apart nicely; others were still a little too tough.
It’s early days for them and we will try them again in a while. We’ll probably eat in next time to see if it makes a difference and try some of the vegetarian dishes too.
