This week, we explore stories about the Upper West Side that may offend several of your senses.

People who live above a truffle store at 10 West End Avenue complain there are
“incredibly foul odors” emanating from the store that are stinking up the rest of the building and making at least one apartment “uninhabitable.”  The condo association is suing,  seeking $2 million and an injunction against the truffle owners. But isn’t this good PR for the truffle company — our truffles are so stinky, they will drive you out of your home! (NY Post)

From stinky to loud: a CrossFit gym on Columbus and 67th street is so loud that it sounds like there’s a constant construction site in the basement, some neighbors say. One other problem: the gym never got the required permits from the Board of Standards and Appeals to open a gym. “But that hasn’t stopped gym members from lifting heavy free weights and kettlebells and then dropping them to the ground, creating ‘forces that are on par with a jackhammer,’ said a resident of the condominium who did not wish to be named.” (DNAinfo)

At Reebok Sports Club on 67th and Columbus, grownups can join gym classes that remind them of childhood recess. “Next, we were called upon to summon our inner animals — or inner crustacean, in one case. For the ‘gorilla,’ we moved across the floor in a squat, reaching with both hands to the side to touch the floor, then shuffling our feet laterally to keep up with our hands. For the ‘inchworm,’ we bent forward with legs straight, then walked our hands out until we were in plank position.” (NY Times

Katalin Levay, the dog-walker who chased a Hungarian Pumi sheep-herding dog into the Harlem Meer lake last week had a brief but terrifying experience. “I managed to swim with water filling my boots, him under my arm and paddling.” (Daily News)

I love the truffle place… they have the best truffles and porcini. They can give me that condo anytime.

Really? You’d want to live in that building, where the subway is a HAUL to get to, your only grocery option is Western Blah, you live across the street from constant construction, and have the noise from two schools (the religious day school and JJay) on either side of you?

I am curious, though: Why is the tenant FIRST raising an issue now? That truffle store has been there for a few years now.

Re: “…your only grocery option is Western Blah….”

TOTALLY NOT TRUE!!

Ten West End is at W. 60th. Within an easy “New York Walk” are THREE excellent sources of groceries:

1) A few blocks north on West End is the new up-scale grocery calling itself “Gracefully”:

2) A bit further away, at 68th and Freedom Place, is the amazing and huge Jubilee Market which easily rivals Whole Foods and/or Fairway in its cornucopia of great things to eat;

3) And, on W. 66th just east of Amsterdam, is the equally tempting Gourmet Garage.

YES, all three are “upscale and pricey” — but so is the area. And if one wants to economize, there IS always Western Beef — not exactly “Blah” but certinly affordable for the residents of the nearby NYCHA Amsterdam Houses.

60th and West End (or, more aptly, 59th and 11th) is quite a distance from Jubilee. It’s a heck of a hill (and my legs work just fine). At night in that neck of the woods, I feel like it’s me, the speeding taxis, and apparently, an upset tenant above a truffle store that always appears vacant.
ETA: There is an Ess-a-Bagel over there, so I guess I can’t say “blah” to everything. To me, though, that area is far from the “heart” of the UWS. If anything, it’s the “bottom” of Trumpville.

sorry Jubilee Market is the nastiest rudest grocery in NYC. The manager is so mean and nasty, he treats customers like criminals. No self respecting person would shop there.

It’s a Hungarian “Puli,” not a “Pumi.” Check out the Westminster Dog Show next week for comfirmation.

And of course Whole Foods in TWC is not THAT far.
