An 84-year-old man was arrested Saturday morning for throwing heavy items out of a sixth floor window at a senior center on West 71st street. The man, Norman Canter, allegedly tossed a bottle out of the window at the Hargrave House near Columbus Avenue, hitting a car, according to NYPD. He apparently threw other objects too. Witness Liz Patek told us: “Some [people] mentioned that weights had been thrown out the window. I didn’t see any on the sidewalk, but there was a heavy metal case (similar to a camera case) on the sidewalk.”
Canter was charged with reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.
Witness Ellie M., who took the photo above, tells us she overheard police accusing the man of setting a fire in his room, although he was not charged with arson. FDNY arrived at the scene at 9:37 and immediately put out a fire in the kitchen. (NYPD had said the arrest occurred at 12:43 p.m., but witnesses were clear it was around 9:30. They may have finalized the arrest at 12:43.)
The McDonalds nearby discontinued the senior discount because people from this place were hanging out all day in it, driving everybody crazy.
Sean,
What about the homeless, derelict, and high-school discount? Having grown up down the block, I can say that *they* are the populations driving everyone else crazy in McDonalds.
You’ve got it wrong, Sean. The people who live at the Hargrave are decent elderly people who do not hang out at McDonald’s all day. You are confusing them with others who ‘hang out’ in the neighborhood. Please get your facts straight before making such wreckless and damaging statements.
Please note the typo contained in my previous comment: the word is ‘reckless’ not ‘wreckless’. My apologies.
