NEW RESTAURANTS COMING: FARM-TO-TABLE, HIGH-END MEDITERRANEAN

DIG INN

Two new restaurants — Dig Inn and Bustan — are expected to open in the near future on the Upper West Side.

The old Cardomat space on Broadway between 112th and 113th street is getting a new tenant: Dig Inn, a restaurant and market with five other locations in the city that sells itself as farm-to-counter. Dig Inn sells salads, sandwiches, shakes and meat and appetizer plates.  Their philosophy is to “shun the world of processed and industrialized food.” That said, they’re not against working with formers that use pesticides and fertilizers. Dig Inn apparently had a previous incarnation as a bodybuilder shake chain called The Pump. The menu is here.

Bustan, a new high-end Mediterranean spot, is opening in the former location of Hey Mambo on Amsterdam between 83rd and 84th streets. Few details have been released about the restaurant so far, but the owners were recently looking for workers on Craigslist.

Thanks to Sean and Sarah for the tips and photos.

Bustan is the brainchild of Guy Goldstein (formerly of Nice Matin, Cellar72) and Efi Naon (Barbournia).

Let’s hope the wine list isn’t full of mass-produced labels from big companies (like Nice Matin)…of wait…was there last night…it is. Oh well….too many other options in the hood that are more interesting. Food is solid though! Good luck!

I have to wonder if the Bustan/Hey Mambo spot is the victim of being almost directly facing the bus stop shelter and a trash collection area. The adjacent establishments are bars, to my recollection, which don’t seem to matter so much. When you’re eating, though, you want a different sense of sidewalk presence outside the front window.

In any event, it seems that one spot has turned over more than the others around there.
