When Pomodoro owner Peter Coundouris opened Park West at 103 West 70th street in the former home of Epices, he said he wanted it to become a hot date spot. But he either misjudged the neighborhood’s vibe, or didn’t quite pull it off, because Park West is closed just a few months after opening. Park West served “New American” food, including Southern Fried Cornish Hen. It will be replaced by another restaurant, a sign on the door says.
As one tipster told us: “with local families not welcome, guess that didn’t work out all that well.”
Unfortunately, the environment felt a bit cold and generic, as if right out of a restaurant furniture catalog. There was no real spark or personality in the space…the energy was all wrong. Too self-conscious on one hand; lacked effort on another. It landed in the middle, feeling like nothing. Here’s hoping for more warmth and personality in whatever follows.
Sort of an awkward place. I’m not surprised to see it close.
We had a lovely group dinner in their back room. Unlike some popular places, which act as though they’re doing your group a favor, the staff at Park West worked hard at serving us well, and the food was very good and not ridiculously overpriced. We need more places like that.
the one thing that was really cool about that restaurant was the TV at the bar – where it was placed behind a transparent mirror. But that’s about it. We can get $24 burgers at so many other places around town.
Except that a TV in a bar is enough of a reason to drink elsewhere.
It was really expansive for a neighborhood spot. And the drinks were so so.
