A 38-year-old woman told police she was raped in Central Park early Sunday morning.
The woman was walking inside the park at 100th street near 5th avenue around 4:45 a.m. when a man pulled her off of a path into the woods and raped her, according to the Post and Daily News. She was taken by private car to Mount Sinai hospital. There were no other details released about the crime. Police were still investigating late Sunday afternoon.
Update: Gothamist reports “Cops tell us that the woman initially walked into the park with her alleged attacker early this morning—she wasn’t jumped or dragged into the park. They also say the incident was reported closer to 3:30 a.m.”

What was she doing in the park at 4:45 a.m.? Just because you think you should be able to walk in the park at anytime doesn’t mean it’s smart and unfortunately can suffer the consequences. It’s a horrible thing to have happen to say the least but It’s a pretty stupid thing to walk in the park at that hour.
First of all. It has been established that she was with someone. Seems like it might have been him.
Another thing> Yes 4:45 am is an ungodly hour especially on 100th street and 5th ave in the park! I tend to disagree with egg that there are joggers, runners and cops all over the place in the park at that hour. Maybe 6 am but certainly not 4:30 am on a Sunday no less and again, on 100th street and 5th ave. I’m in NO WAY CONDONING what happened. Or that anyone deseres that at ay time!!!! But we need to be smart about what, where and when we do something. I never walk thru a gang of people hanging in middle of street. I always cross over to the other side as a precaution. Jus t because I can doesn’t mean I should. For safety purposes. It’s called being STREET SMART!
Way to blame the victim, Christina.
Clearly it is all this poor woman’s fault for getting attacked and raped for choosing to walk outside on the street early in the morning (she had some nerve). Are you kidding me? She did nothing wrong, she broke no laws, she was literally minding her business walking on the street when she became the victim of a crime perpertrated by a criminal.
This woman suffered an attack and rape and all you can think about is how stupid she was for walking on the street in the morning? Do you think this completely non-criminal action of hers caused her to derserve to be brutalized? People like you disgust me. I bet you also sit there and tut tut about women who may be wearing short skirts or lowcut shirts as “suffering the consequences of their actions” in the form of rape.
It’s strange to use the phrase “suffer the consequences” as if being in the park at a quarter-to-five is somehow naturally followed by being raped, in the same way that jail consequently follows stealing. Consequences are deserved, and rape should never come to be something that is expected.
4:45 isn’t ungodly early. There are cyclists, runner, and regular police patrols out at that hour. And even on a Sunday there’s traffic from people going off the late shift or going to the early shift.
Regardless this is intended as “just being practical,” that’s some hardcore victim blaming, which is a shame to read. I hope no one says that to her directly; certainly not any advocate or someone who potentially adjudicates the case. Ah, rape culture, still strong as ever.
I wonder what the real story is here. Raped by an an acquaintance? By a stranger? 3:30 or 4:45 AM? Shouldn’t happen in any case. But what shouldn’t happen does often happen. So why not stay at home at 330 or 445 AM? Why be out at those hours in the park where we all know bad things can happen to good people? As someone else said, use some common sense.
Yes. Let’s not concern ourselves with the fact a rapist is afoot in our neighborhood and attacked a woman. The real issue here is that a FEMALE was out at 4:45am unescorted. What is this neighborhood coming to?
Is this seriously what the people of the UWS want to focus on? A criminal committed a crime! I would be willing to bet if it were a male jogger who was mugged, you would not be sitting here ponitificating about how stupid it was for the victim of a crime to be outside of their house at this hour.
First of all. It has been established that she was with someone. Seems like it might have been him.
