January 8, 2013 Weather: Sunny, High of 46 Degrees.

Notices:
An Irish writer’s salon, a bike lane hearing, a comedy show with $1 oysters, and more events on our calendar.

This weekend, your kid can learn to make food like people did 150 years ago at the New-York Historical Society. That’s right, no Cuisinarts, no microwaves! 8 and older, $10 plus admission.

News:
Local education activists want the city to start a new middle school at the current location of Beacon High School. Beacon is moving to Hell’s Kitchen in 2015, which will leave its space on 61st street open. Upper West Side middle schools are currently overcrowded. (DNAinfo)

The Upper West Side has the tightest housing market in Manhattan, with enough active listings to last for five months at current levels of demand. (The Real Deal)

The condo building at 101 West 87th Street, which was turned over to lenders after construction stalled and funding ran out during the recession, is now selling again. Two-bedrooms start around $1.2 million. (The Real Deal)

The city is replacing many parking signs with ones you can actually read. A long overdue change. (NY Times)

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
