HERE’S WHAT THE HURRICANE DID TO RIVERSIDE PARK MONDAY NIGHT

October 30, 2012 | 5:27 PM

We knew that Hurricane Sandy would rise over the banks of Riverside Park, but we had no idea how high it would go. In the photo below by @westend911, a resident of Riverside South, you can see the water at the base of the steps going up to Riverside Boulevard around 68th Street. That means the basketball courts and bike path were underwater, and indicates that Riverside Park South was probably completely submerged.

This photo below by Richard Robbins shows the water line at 100th Street (where there’s debris) in the tunnel under the West Side Highway.

On 59th Street, the area around the historic Con Ed power station sustained quite a bit of flooding, and firefighters came to try to pump the water out. More photos below by @westend911.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
