FREE SERIES OF CANDLELIT BACH CONCERTS STARTS AGAIN THIS SUNDAY

A free series of Bach cantatas performed by candlelight starts this Sunday at Holy Trinity Church on 65th Street and Central Park West. The musicians use the same instruments that were used in the 18th century and perform the cantatas just as Bach’s musicians did almost 300 years ago.

“There are very few places in the United States where anything like this happens, very few places in the world,” said Pastor Rev. William Heisley.

The Bach Vespers concerts are free, although you can make an offering.

“Each Sunday from late October through Easter, cantatas are rendered on their appropriate liturgical day following the practice of J.S. Bach himself in 18th Century Leipzig,” according to Holy Trinity. “These candlelit vespers services also include organ works, choral motets, chamber music and vibrant hymn singing.”

Concerts generally start at 5 p.m. For the full schedule, click here. And see a video about the performances below:

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
