A free series of Bach cantatas performed by candlelight starts this Sunday at Holy Trinity Church on 65th Street and Central Park West. The musicians use the same instruments that were used in the 18th century and perform the cantatas just as Bach’s musicians did almost 300 years ago.
“There are very few places in the United States where anything like this happens, very few places in the world,” said Pastor Rev. William Heisley.
The Bach Vespers concerts are free, although you can make an offering.
“Each Sunday from late October through Easter, cantatas are rendered on their appropriate liturgical day following the practice of J.S. Bach himself in 18th Century Leipzig,” according to Holy Trinity. “These candlelit vespers services also include organ works, choral motets, chamber music and vibrant hymn singing.”
